Entourage 2004 and Modem Connection

R

Ray Demel

After I updated from Enturage X to 2004, I cannot receive or send
emails using the Powerbook's internal modem or a Sierra Wireless
Aircard. These were all working will in Entourage X and I could get
and send emails with AppleMail and ehternet. In Entourage 2004, I can
use email using Airport wireless or connected to a network via
ethernet but it will not sent or receive using a modem or wireless
modem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Others have reported success by going to the Network panel is System Prefs
and dragging the network connections you want to use to the top of the list
so the OS (and therefore Entourage) will attempt to use them first.

I tried moving the aircard to the top of the list and it still did not work.
I get an internet connect message stating that the selected device is not
installed and to check connection settings yet it shows as being connected
in internet connect and I can surf the web and send/receive emails with
Apple Mail. Seems to be something in Entourage 2004 that is not allowing
the modem to be seen.

I am replying to this mail through the internal modem, while connected to my
home network through a wireless connection.

My network prefs have the modem at the top of the list, the airport second
and wired Ethernet third. All others are turned off.

I have tried your suggestion and it still does not work in Entourage. I
even went so far as to turn everything off except the modem and it still
will not work in Entourage even though every other application like Safari
and Apple Mail will work. It seems that there has to be a setting somewhere
in Entourage that is the problem-why does everything except Entourage work
with the modem?

Ray and Barry, I¹m having the same problem Ray described. At home I use
Entourage 2004 with a wireless DSL connection and everything works
flawlessly since I upgraded last week. I was traveling this weekend and
normally use my Kyocera as a wireless modem while traveling, but received
the same message Ray received when I tried to use the Kyocera. I then tried
using a regular phone line and the internal modem and received the same
message. I finally booted up an old version of Outlook Express and was able
to access my email, but this is a real pain since I teach classes online and
had to set up my classes in OE, then download weeks¹ worth of old messages
to get to the current ones. As soon as I returned home last night and hooked
into the Airport Extreme network, I was able to access Entourage again.

Barry, I¹ve also tried the solution you suggested without success. Is this a
bug in Entourage? If so, will we have a work-around soon. This may seem
minor but it almost makes Entourage unworkable for me. I can¹t solve my
problem with Apple Mail because I teach through newsgroups as opposed to
email.\

Please help.

I¹m at something of a loss as to what I can suggest there are no modem
specific settings in entourage, apart from the Œdial up options¹ at the end
of the schedules window that determine what happens with a connection AFTER
the schedule has run. This will not affect your problems that will not allow
you to connect in the first place.

Please can you clarify are you just clicking on the Œsend & receive¹
button and expecting entourage to connect for you, or are you connecting
through ŒInternet Connect¹ manually, then trying to send & receive? - I must
admit that I have automatic connections turned off, and connect manually
when I want to (I like the control of knowing who is making a network
connection!).

I am connecting manually through internet connect first and then opening
entourage and trying to get/sent emails and it get the internet connect
message that the device does not exist after entourage is open. As I said,
other applications will be able to get to the internet-just entourage 2004
does not connect. The previous version of entourage worked fine.
