Entourage 2004 and SMTP over SSL?

I

Ian Beatty

Greetings.

Ever since I upgraded from Entourage X to 2004, I've been unable to send
mail through my university's authenticated, SSL-using SMTP server.
Entourage just waits and waits, and finally gives up with the error "An
operation on the server timed out. The server may be down, overloaded, or
there may be too much net traffic." I've verified all my server settings and
even recreated the entire account. It used to work with 2004, it works with
my housemate's Apple Mail client, and it works with 2004 from my office on
campus (where I can use a non-authenticated, non-SSL SMTP server) -- all
quite quickly, with no long delay. Entourage 2004 also sends just fine
through my other email account, which uses authenticated SMTP *without*
SSL.

Is it possible Entourage 2004's SMTP-over-SSL support is just plain broken?
Can anyone verify that it works properly for them?

Thanks,

...Ian

Ian,

Have you selected the SMTP services requires secure connection (SSL) and
SMTP server requires authentication in the Account settings tab of Edit
Account Window? (Tools---Accounts--Mail---Accoutnt settings...sending
mail---Click here for advanced sending options---)

Please check

Hi Ian,

What port is being used for the attempted SSL SMTP connection? Also, are you
attempting to login using "Use same settings as receiving mail server" or by
specifying the account ID and password. If you are specifying the account
ID and password, try using the entire email address for the account ID
(instead of just the ID).

Sorry you are having trouble,
Michael

Hi,

I just upgraded to Office 2004 and am having the identical issue. That is, I
am unable to send mail over SSL. I am able to receive and I am able to send
using another ISP that does not require SSL.

I called my ISP and they had me switch from port 465 to port 2525 as a fix.
That didn't help. I noticed a know issue posted on the MS site that indicates
that Entourage 2004 has dropped support for NTLM Version 1
authentication. I called my ISP back and they didn't give me a crisp answer.

I've tried creating a new account from scratch, and trying all combinations
possible within the Accounts pane.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Paul
