Entourage 2004 - connexion problem

G

Glorieux

Hello
I have just installed Office 2004 including Entourage (french version)
My sendings and receptions of messages have initially normally
functioned, but now, even though I didn't change anything, I get
systematically the following message each time I try to send or
receive:
"Connection To Internet: selected device doesn't exist. Check your
adjustments and retry."
However I confirm my connection is already open when I launch
Send or Receive and this connection works fine to connect to Internet
(by Safari or I.explorer).
Any idea about that ?
Thank you in advance of your assistance.

Bonjour Marc,
Hello

systematically the following message each time I try to send or

What type of account is it ?? POP, IMAP, Exchange, hotmail ???
It could also mean that the port is blocked on the network you are
connecting from.

I've started getting exactly the same problem after I installed Office
2004 (I was using Office X before and all working fine). The exact
message I get is "Internet Connect. The selected communication device
does not exist. Please verify your settings and try again."
I'm using a POP account via a cable connection (ADSL in Belgium). The
device that can not be found is the same one as I'm currently using to
work on the web, so what the h*@& is going on ??
Any help would be appreciated !!

Bonjour Corentin
It's a POP account
I must precise that connection works allright with my Internet browser
(Safari or I.explorer).
I have seen the same problem described a couple of times on the
entourage group, but up to now, no answer or even no hint has been
given on a possible cause of this dysfunction.

I¹m one of those who has encountered this problem, and I¹m using an IMAP
account. My connection works fine as long as I¹m logging on wirelessly. When
I try to use a wired modem or a cell phone as a modem, I get the message
about the connection device not being found. The only way I¹ve been able to
work around this is to use an older version of Entourage from Office 2000 or
to use Outlook Express. Good luck and if Microsoft ever gets around to doing
something about this frustrating and difficult issue, I hope they¹ll let us
know.

Yeah but there is a big difference there. Safari or IE will use a
Webmail emulator to get the mail whereas Entourage gets it directly
using the POP protocol. The question would then be more like: can you
get it through Mail for instance ??

The problem is than I never encountered the problem and I don;t really
understand what might be going on. As far as I am concerned, Entourage
(like all other apps) simply uses the regular MacOS X networking
toolboxes. I've suffered from a very similar issue with HogWasher and it
left the developer of the app clueless.
I'll keep on investigating the issue but right now I don;t have a
solution. I'd still be interested to know wether Mail has the same
problem.

One last possibility to try and troubleshoot this would be to use a
port-sniffing application like tcpflow or tcpdump (free but in the
Terminal) or Interarchy (shareware) to monitor the exchage between
Entourage and the POP server.

Bonjour Corentin
I tried Apple Mail. It works fine !
May I also remind you that my connection worked well before with
Entourage X (of course) but also for a few days when I installed
Entourage 2004. I didn't identify any change of configuration or other
programs or whatever when it began refusing to connect. The only thing
is that I switched my Imac off and next time I switched it on it
didn't connect anymore. Needless to say I tried switching off an on
again, with no better results.
I also tried to re-install Entourage. It didn't change anything
Thanks you for your help

Salut Marc,

Is the POP account your La Poste account ??? (by the way, you should add
a little something like NoSpam. between @ and laposte in your adress
when you post here if you don;t want to be flooded with spam...).
La Poste uses a weird version of POP. It also took me forever to get it
to work with Eudora.
May I also remind you that my connection worked well before with

That's the weird part (unless they made some changes on their servber
since then).

I'm getting stuck here. The only hope I'd have would be with
port-sniffing as I mentioned but I'm not sure you want to go that far...

Tiscali/Libertysurf should work just fine :-\

I'm afraid it's going to be hard to find out what's wrong without
looking at a port-sniffing log from tcpflow, tcpdumpt or interarchy :-(

I also should mention that when I launch a send/receive messages in
Entourage, I get a message at the left bottom of the Entourage screen,
that says : Dialing (in French : Composition du numéro, even though
connection was already open. To me this means the program doesn't see
the connection is open and attempts to open a new one on an unexisting
device ....

Hi,
Well, considering the situation, I turned around the problem and now I
use a solution that works :
I had my Imac connected to my PC via home network. The PC is connected
to internet via DSL.
Within this network, Entourage 2004 connects normally.
Still, I hate to have to do that, which means my Imac isn't autonomous
anymore.
So, I still am interested into solving this unexplained dysfunction.
All the best

I have no idea what these are !
How should I proceed ?

Well these apps monitor and log all traffic going in and out of the Mac.
You can restrict the analysis to a specific server to make it easier to
analyze.
The first two apps are free (and tcpdump is already installed in the
system, try man tcpdump in the Terminal) but they are command line
application. If you're not familiar with worjking in the Terminal, you
are not going to like it.
Interarchy is primarely an advanced FTP client, but amonsgt the many
tools it offers, it has a very neat Network monitoring tool that lets
you listen to the traffic on your Mac through a regular user interface.
The problem is htat the application is a shareware. You'll need a
license (maybe you can try the app in demo mode - I don't really know
since I have a license).

I can tell you more about the apps if you want to, but which one do you
want to use ??

this looks like there is something wrong with your settings... You
should really double-check the prefs and Account settings :-(

Hi Marc:

I ran into the same problem recently, where, after upgrading to Microsoft
Office 2004 and trying to send/receive with Entourage, resulted in the
following error message:

"Internet Connect. The selected communication device does not exist.
Please verify your settings and try again."

In my particular case (Mac OS 10.3.4) I was using a Sprint wireless card to
connect to the internet. The solution for me was to open System
Preferences->Network and change the network port configuration order (by
dragging into the order you want to try them when connecting to a network).

You might try experimenting with network ports in different order to see if
it helps.

Hi guys (and dolls),

I'm happy again (so far) : I managed to get rid of the connection
problem by reviewing a few threads in this newsgroup and just trying a
few things. I used a combination of 2 solutions that I found in
different threads :

1. I deleted my network existing network locations and create one new
one again
2. I sequenced my port configurations to have the port I'm using as
first one in the list, and to make sure, I de-activated all other
ports (because I'm not using them anyway)

That did the job for me : I got my mail again !
So I'm finally going to really explore this new version of Entourage,
and I only hope I don't encounter too many other problems.

For those of you that are still having the problem : try this one out
and I hope it will be a solution for you too !

Ronny
