Entourage 2004 does not sync when in background

I believe the speed issue with entourage is a common problem when
compared with Outlook. But the synching with our exchange server is
painful to say the least. Whereas Outlook is instantaneous, entourage
will not even sych unless the app is in the foreground. So I never
receive new mail unless I click on entourage (or it is so slow it
never appears, and click on entourage kick starts it into checking for
mail.) Accordig to our IT support we are running a version of Exchange
that should work fine. Is this normal???

Before upgrading our Exchange srvr from 5.5 to 2000 we
noticed the same issues.. what seems to help is to disable
Tools > Schedules > Send & Receive All entirely. Since
doing that most of our users seem to be getting their
messages much faster, though still not as fast as w/
Outlook 2001 in Classic.
