Entourage 2004, IMAP, links

When using Entourage 2004 and POP and replying (or forwarding) a mail, you
get a link in the original message: "Show Reply". Clicking this will bring
up the reply.

When using Entourage 2004 and IMAP (it's a .Mac account) and replying (or
forwarding) a mail, this link will not show up. Actually, it seems to be the
operation of moving the sent mail to a "Sent Mail" folder on the IMAP server
that is the problem: I see the link "Show Reply" for a second or so, and at
the same time the message is moved to the IMAP folder and then the link
disappears.

Clicking on the link symbol will show the menu of linked messages, and there
I can select the reply! But the text "Show Reply" in the yellow area above
the message isn't there.

Anybody know why this is so? Is it a bug? Will it be fixed?

This is what Paul Berkowitz posted a while ago in response to this issue:
The IMAP server you're using must be a non-UIDPLUS server. If you're
referring to  a mac.com (.Mac) account, that's precisely what you've got.
You can confirm for any IMAP server by selecting the account icon in the
Folders list and right-clicking (control-clicking) it, and choose "Get
Info". If the dialog window that comes up doesn't contain "UIDPLUS", it's
non-UIDPLUS.

Only UIDPLUS servers can track new messages on the server. With non-UIDPLUS
servers the messages can't be found, so the sent message can't be tracked
once it's been uploaded to the server.

You get what you pay for. I have two IMAP accounts myself. One is .Mac, and
I naturally have the same problem. Entourage knows I have replied to a
message but offers no link to the reply. (It can find original messages from
the reply, because those haven't been moved or created new.) My other IMAP
account is provided by my university and is a much better server than
.Mac's. (It's a Cyrus server.) I _do_ the links to the replies with this
account.

It's got nothing to do with Entourage. It's the type and quality of the IMAP
server, namely whether it has the UIDPLUS feature or not. And there's no
point complaining to Apple either. If you ever have the opportunity to get
an IMAP account from elsewhere, check if it's UIDPLUS or not.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. This certainly explains it.

Maybe Paul is correct in there not being any point in complaining to Apple,
but I've done so anyway. I hope they'll add UIDPLUS in the future.
