I guess it's some strange combination of entourage and osx locking the
modifier keys when the password box is up? maybe?
I have seen this as well with Entourage 2004 (OSX 10.3.4). Entourage
seems to somehow get the operating system confused, so that the
Command key (in my case) appears to be "stuck" either up and down
position. You can confirm this by opening the System Preference
"International" panel, choosing "Input Menu" and enabling "Keyboard
Viewer". You should now see a little flag icon in your menu bar with
the "Show Keyboard Viewer" option, which will bring up a little
graphical keyboard. You can watch the modifier keys go on and off as
you press them. When the system gets in the "stuck" state, the
affected key (such as Command) will no longer visibly respond, even
though you are physically depressing and releasing it. I can also
confirm that a programming environment that allows me to query the
state of the modifier keys (4th Dimension database language) also
reports back the same wrong info on their state.
I only started seeing this problem with the installation of Office
2004. It only happens for me when Entourage is running (of course,
this is most of the time), and the problem immediately goes away if I
quit Excel. The only other person here who has encountered it so far
had Adobe Acrobat running, but I would think that I've had it happen
with no Adobe products running. The password box report is
interesting; I have an Entourage identity with a couple IMAP accounts,
and Entourage occasionally seems to "forget" the password when I go
from one to the other (even though I tell it to save it to the
Keychain). This glitch was happening in Enrage X as well, but it does
mean I get the password box more often than most, so if it is somehow
involved I may be seeing the stuck modifier key problem more often as
a result.
