Entourage 2004 smtp problem and error code lookup

H

Howard Dinin

Entourage refuses to send mail through my usual mail server. It works in the
U.S. with my usual (cable company) ISP. Here in France I am using a ISDN
dial-up service.

It keeps giving a 5.1.1 authentication message, saying I must be
authenticated. The Microsoft error code is -17099.

Of course it's impossible to find a database of error codes (why do they
bother?).

My U.S. mail server administration suggests that the French ISP is blocking
port 25, but all other mail (through mac.com, for example) gets sent,
including the mail server provided by the French ISP...

Any ideas?

Thanks

Howard

Turn on authentication - in the accounts dialog (Tools menu, 'accounts...'),
click on the 'advanced sending options' button and turn on authentication.
Try 'same a POP3 server' to start with.
