Entourage 2004 - Synchronizing w/Exchange

M

Mike Wong

I just upgraded from Entourage X to 2004. The install and auto-migration of
settings/prefs seemed to work fine, including my Exchange server settings.

But when I launched E2004 for the first time, I got a message that says
³Entourage is now synchronizing in the background with your Exchange
account: ³account name². Synchronization time varies depending on the amount
of data you are synchronizing and the speed of your connection.²

It¹s been almost 7 hours since I first saw that message. E2004 has been open
the entire time. No progress dialogs anywhere. I can quit E2004 and do not
get the usual ³there is a network operation in progress, are you sure?²
message. Re-launching E2004 gives me the same ³synchronization² dialog. But
my Exchange inbox (and other folders) do not appear.

All settings are the same as they were with Entourage X when mail worked
fine. I¹ve got a small amount of meetings established about about 480
contacts to need to be synchronized. Here¹s what I¹ve tried so far to
troubleshoot. None of these have gotten me any further.

1. Set E2004 to only synchronize items with a specific category. (only 3
contacts with this category).
2. Set E2004 to not synchronize anything.
3. Deleted the account that was imported during the initial install and set
up new account. E2004¹s set up wizard saw my exchange server, but only
displays a ³Junk Mail² folder when I twist open the exchange account.

Has anybody else experienced this? If so, how did you resolve the issue?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, your description is exactly what I am experiencing!

So far I have not been able to solve this issue, our system
administrator has no clue to why this happens. All that stuff about
Free/Busy servers has him rolling his eyes and wondering what the heck I
am talking about.

Mike..

I have exactly the same problem and I have posted under the "Not
Connected Message" post.

Basically I can take a machine that is running Entourage X just fine,
install Entourage 2004 an either import main identity from x or add
new ( ihave done both) and all you get is the Not Connected in
brackets after the profile message.

I have seen this problem posted many times under different guises so
clearly it a major issue for some people like ourselves.

If you install from a new build it seems fine, but an upgrade from X
to 2004 seems to fail...

I think the main clue lies in the fact that even if you don't supply
it a password then entourage 2004 never asks for your password when it
launches, that is why you get the Not Connected message and nothing
happens. I have tried removing the keychain entries and numerous other
things like repairing permissions and de-installing office X and
putting on just enoturage 2004. Something seems to linger which is not
obviously named that is preventing the connection.

I hope that Microsost or someone can come up with a solution as I have
about 100 macs that I would ultimately like to upgrade fom x to 2004.

Mark,

Thanks for the response.

If I understand you right on this, if I re-install 2004 and don't let it up
grade or migrate me from Entourage X, things work. Is that right? I'm
willing to try this if you think (or know) that is the trick.

FYI - I just got off the phone with Microsoft tech support. I talked to
somebody in Entourage help thinking that was the obvious place, but it's
not. They did not know how to resolve this issue. If anybody calls in, you
have to ask for the Exchange group.

Thanks,
Mike

I've only seen this on two occassions:
- Once when I made modifications to the settings as the app was
attempting to get the data for the first time (I performed a database
rebuild to get all the data imported againa dn it wa fine).
- A couple of times when some of the infromation was missing in the
settings (eg: alias instead of complete e-mail address as the login, no
domain...).

Could it be the same for you here ???

Mike...

In my experience the only way to get it to work is if you have never
previously had Office X on a machine that you wish to put Office 2004
or Entourage 2004 on, or if you completely rebuild the machine !!!!!

This clearly is a major issue, I wonder if microsoft are looking in.
Am a bit busy for the rest of this week but will try and spend a whole
day on it next week, that is unless someone else solves it !

Hello,

We have two exchange servers and we have this problem only in one of
the servers. I believe that it is an exchange setting or something to
do with the DNS records. The accounts that are on our second server
work fine but we get the same "(Not connected)" error with the
accounts on our first server.
I have check the settings on both servers and it seems that they are
configure the same so I am puzzled as what or where is the thing that
prevents the accounts from connecting to the Exchange server.

I know that this does not bring a light on the previous messages but I
believe that does not have anything to do with Entourage 2004 when it
is configured on Mac OS X.
I have also created different identities from both servers on the same
computer and like I mentioned before only the accounts in our second
server work. If it was a problem with Entourage none of the accounts
would work.

Does anyone here know what protocols do the Exchange accounts on
Entourage use?

Thanks,
elena

It uses the same protocol OWA uses, HTTP-DAV. If you can type a URL into a
web browser to view your Exchange data, you should be able to use the same
URL in Entourage to get your mail, contacts, and calendar.

I would like to chime in on this one with a question I asked a couple
of weeks ago in the forum and seems to be related. Below is the
question I asked on July 14th. I think the problem may be related to
the fact that I had to configure the connection to the server using
the IP address of the server. When I tried to use the DNS name of the
server I got an error message (I wish I could remember the exact
message) about invalid user name and password. This worked fine for
mail and calendar for the main user but seems to be failing on the
setup in Delegate and with contacts. The previous discussion seems to
point to a set up issue on the Exchange server but any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated.

We have set up a couple mac with Entourage 2004 to access our Exchange
2003 server. Mail and their personal calendar works fine but we want
to get them accessing a shared calendar. When I go to Delegate and
input the user name of the shared calendar it recognizes it but the
user shows up in the view on the left as (not connected) and it never
syncs any of the calendar information. I have a feeling I am missing
something on the settings. The other thing is that the address book
has not come over from the exchange server. May be part of the same
problem.

Thanks for your help.
