Entourage 2004 Text/Justification/Font Display Issue

B

I've seen a number of people now report the same issue: upon creating
a new email or calendar event after viewing a complex email message,
the text in the dialog boxes and drop-down menus becomes distorted and
improperly aligned.

I called Microsoft on the issue and they really did try to be helpful,
but ultimately they blew me off and told me it was a "Mac OS X"
problem and that I had to call Apple.

It makes me angry that I'm just supposed to accept that this is a bug
that affects some users and not others and I'm one of the unlucky
chumps who shelled out hundreds for a piece of software that doesn't
work. Is that this size of it? Is there nothing I can do to fix this
problem? Is Microsoft even aware of it or working to resolve it?

Seems to me that there are enough people reporting it on this board to
do something about it. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Yes, we've said so here several times. Although it may possibly be the
result of something in Mac OS X (actually I haven't heard that one before,
so the low-level Microsoft phone support person may not have known what he
was talking about), now that Microsoft know about the problem you can rest
assured that they will be working on a fix that works around any OS bugs.
Since this problem is quite rare, it never cropped up during their
pre-release testing, and only appeared after release.

They know about it already and will be working on a fix.

What you can do in the meantime is avoid displaying complex HTML messages.
How? In Preferences/Security, uncheck "Display complex HTML in messages". It
means you'll miss pictures on websites transmitted by email. 95% of complex
HTML messages (or maybe 99%) are unsolicited advertising anyway - mostly
spam. You'll still get pictures inserted into HTML messages are sent as
attachments (which is how "regular people" generally send pictures) just
fine. If you don't turn off this pref then you'll often be clicking on
complex HTML messages unawares (there's no way to tell before you click on
them)( and will have to quit and relaunch Entourage afterwards to get back
full functionality.

So really what we are saying is that something that affects Entourage on all
versions of MAC OS X , in an application that is "built for OS X" does not
behave as it should, is actually not an Entourage issue, but an OS X issue.

Ah so the reason is that I am using MAC OS X..

I get it .. If I could just run windows on my MAC right?

On a serious note, the lack of responsiveness make me feel like dumping it
altogether, I get better support from a $10 shareware app then a
multi-hundred $ application?

Ok so I turned of this feature and now 30% of my emails are illegible?

But wait I can actually use the calendar and send mail again great?

Take with one hand and cut of the other?

I hope this gets some attention at Microsoft I am very dismayed by my
responses by MS to this issue, but thanks for the fix.

I agree - I'm having the same problem. But it worked fine for six
weeks, and then the problem started with no changes to my OS. So how
is this an OS X problem? Quitting and relaunching 30 times a day so I
can read what is on screen is not a vey good use of time. I've tried
everything I can think of, with no solution except turn off 'Display
complex HTML' but sometimes I WANT to display complet HTML!!

As much as I hate to see others having this problem, I'm glad to see
it's not just me. I upgraded to Office 2004 the day it came out. I've
had this problem since day 1. I called Microsoft in the beginning, and
they acted as if i was crazy. Microsoft has come out with a few updates
since the release of 2004, but none of them seem to address this issue.
Does anyone know anything about a fix (other than turning off complex
html display)?

SOLUTION! I have found the source of the problem on my system, thanks
to an Archive and Install with a fresh system. The problem reappeared
when I loaded the Shutterfly Internet Plug-Ins. Once I removed them
from the Library>Internet Plug-Ins folder, the problem went away. If
you have these Plug Ins, I recommend you try removing them, or any
other suspect Plug Ins - it seems they affect the html rendering engine
used by Entourage. I hope this helps.
