Hi Guys,
I have a large database (17.5G) and when I try and open entourage, it tells
me that I have to rebuild the database. I get to stage 4/5 and it tells me I
have an error. I have tried this numerous times with the same results
I did have a backup using timemachine but after doing some research, I am
given to understand that that backup is flawed and useless.
So I am left only with my current database which I cannot open.
I have run the disk utility on the mac and no problems discovered.
Does anybody have any thoughts or suggestions.

I had the same problem with a 10 GB database. My mail worked fine under
2004 and I could rebuild it with no problems under 2004 but every time I
tried under 2008 it would get to 4/5 and give me the same error message.
Thanks to help from Diane mine is now fixed. The fix is not that easy
but it works.
First, create a new 2008 identity and make sure it works.... pops mail
etc. You will have to manually do your Accounts over but can drag copy
your Rules and Signatures. Then go off line and open your 2004
Entourage. Drag your Inbox and Sent Mail (and others you my have) to
the desktop then close Entourage 2004.
Start Entourage 2008 in your newly created identity and drag one at time
each of the Inbox-mbox files from your desktop to the panel on left.
After it imports you will have a Inbox and an Inbox-mbox folders.
At this point i would try to rebuild using the 2008 Microsoft Database
Utility to see if you can pass the 4/5 barrier.
You will then have open the Inbox-mbox folder and select ALL and drag
copy them to your Inbox folder. You have to drag copy as MS seems to
have removed or changed the Move box we had in 2004. Once your mail
messages are secure and look right to you, right-click on the Inbox-mbox
folder and select the delete option. You will only have this delete
option on imported mbox folders.
After getting everything into the new identity, i then used the Change
Identity to change the name of the newly created identity back to my
primary name.
The really good news came after rebuilding.... the size of my database
when from 10 GB to 5 GB and it works perfect and messages are there. I
suspect my 2004 database got hosed over time and this may expain why it
was so large and could not be imported or rebuilt by the 2008 Microsoft
Database Utility.
It was a PITA to get Humpty-Dumpty back together again but was worth the
required extra effort. It is working great now I have no compact or
rebuild issues with 2008.
I may have skipped a step or two but I hope you get the jest of what was
needed to clear the 2008 Microsoft Database Utility error. I cannot
blame Entourage 2008 for my screwed up 2004 database that had to be
fixed.
