Entourage 2008 Update 12.0.1 Fails to Update Keys

AnneMac

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: intel
Email Client: pop

I installed the most recent update on 3/17/08 and my Entourage email immediately started freezing and hanging, repeatedly requesting permission to update the keys for my accounts.

The whole Mac froze, using nearly 100% of the processor and memory, and no error messages appeared in console.log or system.log.

After 2 hours, I finally had to force quit. My Entourage is unable to function at all, and freezes on opening.

I tried manually downloading and re-installing the update, but it won't allow me to install it because it says it doesn't find a qualifying version of the software there. (Because I'm all legal and registered, I took that to mean it found version 12.0.1 on there already and figured I didn't need to update again.)

Any ideas how I can get this straightened out?

Usually after an update, you will need to OK using the passwords in
Keychain, but it should not be causing you to freeze.

You will need to remove and re-install.

Thanks, Diane!

I found the problem by opening my Keychain Access under the Applications/Utility folder. Since my Entourage was freezing after I had authorized it to update the keychain, I surmised it had something to do with not being allowed to do what it needed there.

So, I opened each keychain entry for the email accounts, and found that I had to open the access to them. I still had entries there for Entourage 2004, and although they were not a problem until I applied the update, I went ahead and cleaned those out and made sure the 2008 version of Entourage had access.

Twelve email accounts later, I opened Entourage again, and it was up and running, able to check and download all my POP and IMAP accounts again. Whew!

Turns out that was a lot faster than reinstalling, which I would have done if this method hadn't worked.

Thanks again for your help!

Thanks for letting us know. Did you try keychain first aid first? That would
have been easier if it had worked.

I did try the Keychain First Aid first, but it did not fix the entries for the mail accounts that Entourage 2008 wasn't able to access after the update.

I made the manual adjustments only after that failed. Sorry, I forgot to mention that!

I found exactly the same issue as reported by AnneMac today after I did the auto-upgrade to 12.0.1. A clue for me was that I had created another user account on my machine after I had upgraded to Office 2008. This user account had no issues with running the new version of Entourage; but on my account, which had been created with the previous version of Office, went into disk thrashing as soon as Entourage's request for Keychain Access was granted. Even if I killed Entourage, the thrashing would continue until I restarted the machine.

I had already run Keychain First Aid on my keychain, but found no issues. Thanks to AnneMac's observations, I went in and deleted all of the old password entries for Entourage accounts in my login keychain, and restarted the application. Outside of having to re-enter the passwords for my accounts at start-up time, and get them into my Keychain, Entourage came up flawlessly.

Kudos to AnneMac!

Hi, thanks for the info. As it turned out, once I manually fixed the keychain to remove Entourage 2004 entries from the accounts, it has been all good since then.
