Entourage adds .doc to my .rtf docs!

Josh Coen

Anyone else having this issue? I often send .rtf docs from Word through
Entourage. When the document shows up in Entourage, it has added a .doc
at the end. So I get something like salesletter.rtf.doc, which seems a
little lame. Anyone have any ideas on how to stop the program from
appending a .doc suffix?

Thanks!

Josh

Preferences/Compose, and uncheck "Append file name extensions" should do it.
It looks like Entourage assumes that every file (except maybe some other
types it knows about) made by Word is a .doc . It's probably going by
four-character file type.

Paul,

Thank you for the reply! I believe I've tried that before. But to be
sure, I tried it again and it still appended the .doc on the .rtf. The
only way I've figured out how to get around it, is to uncheck the
Append File Extension box in Word so that the file has no extension.
Then when Entourage adds its extension, I only have one on there. It
seems like there should be a real solution, though, rather than a
work-around.

If Entourage is still adding .doc, when the file is actually RTF, I think
that may be a worse result than having it as .rtf.doc

But you must be doing something wrong. I saved a document as RTF from Word
2004, with Word adding the correct extension .rtf.

I then dragged the .rtf file to a new message window in Entourage 2004
11.2.3, with Entourage's preferences set to Append extension, Since there
already is an extension it didn't append any other extension, it just left
the .rtf in place. I sent the message, and received it again with a simple
..rtf extension - no extra .doc was added. (Then I turned OFF Entourage's
"Append extension" pref, and tried again. Once again it worked fine, leaving
the .rtf in place and not adding .doc.)

So there must be something wrong. What version of Entourage do you have?
Exactly (check "About Entourage" in the Entourage menu).

Except that if you use 'send to - mail recipient (as attachment)' the second
extension does get added, as Josh describes.

It appears to be a bug. I will send a report in on your behalf Josh, but if
you want to raise the issue yourself, you can 'send feedback' to the
developers using the item in the help menu.
