Entourage and Email Server

David Mann

Hi

We are a company of 25 users all using MACs and Microsoft Entourage. We have
just ordered a G5 XServe which may turn up soon. Can someone give me advice
on Email Server capabilities please.

Is the standard server mail functionality in an XServe ok for us or should
we be getting something like an Exchange Server. We do not have any PCs or
Windows Servers so we would need to be a PC as well as the software.

My main issues concern our lack of a real email server with any
capabilities, and more importantly I believe we need a proper exchange
mailbox environment as I am worried about the volume of mail held locally on
machines and not part of some backup process ?

Any ideas / recommendations ?

As far as I know, these machines are very efficient e-mail servers.

Exchange offers diffenrent services. If you just need to handle e-mail
(POP/IMAP plus an LDAP directory), then you don't need Exchange. If you
need to sync address book and calendar on the server to use through
multiple machine or webmail, then Exchange is a possibility (though I
guess you could manage to implement similar functions on the XServe).

Anyway, as the Aplpe page says:
http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/mail_services.html

Mail on MacOS X server is based on PostFix (a reference, really!) and
offers the entire range of classical mail functions:
POP, IMAP, SMTP, LDAP, WebMail, Mailing lists (all through SSL if
required)

The XServe is a really poweful machine. I don;t doubt that it can handle
mail. My only question would be what functions do you require from the
mail server?
