How do I change the setting so Entourage will not copy
down all of my emails to my local drive. I just want
Entourage to read the emails and leave the on the Exchange
server as Outlook does for OS9. Entourage is eating up all
of my drive space.
To read the messages, Entourage has to download messages to your local
cache. You can control-click on the server icon for your Exchange account in
the Folder list, and select Empty Cache from the contextual menu. Empty your
Deleted Items folder, quit Entourage, the restart it holding down Option
key. Choose Typical Rebuild. That will compact the database (but you do need
as much room on your hard disk as the size of the file to do the rebuild. So
if you're really that short of space, you might have to back up other files
to an external disk, delete them and empty the Finder's Trash.) Then delete
the "Old Database" file in ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office X
Identities/[username] or "Main Identity" folder.
In future don't wait so l;long before emptying the cache. Then you don't
need to do a Typical Rebuild (don't overtax your hard drive). Just Empty the
Cache. Empty Deleted Items folder, and new messages will start filling up th
old space. Repeat when necessary.
