Entourage Attachments Fail to Send (bis)

Barry,

Thanks for your reply. My attempts to reply to your newsgroup posting
have failed, so perhaps this time it will go through.

I'm running O/S 10.2.8 (6R73) on my PowerBook G4. I've updated
Office to 10.1.5. My Internet connection is via AirPort to a cable
modem supplied by Time Warner for service provided by Earthlink.

I've tried compacting the Entourage database, and creating a new
identity, to no avail.

Thanks for your assistance,

Dion

I've tried compacting the Entourage database, and creating a new
identity, to no avail.

Did you quit Notifications before trying the rebuild?

The Microsoft Database daemon allows the Reminder to work even if all MS
applications are closed. The daemon is actually used all the time to access
the Database. Even Word uses it. This is why you need to Quit Notifications
and/or the Microsoft Database daemon when you install MS updates.

For more
info on the daemon see:

Diane,

Thanks for your reply; I'm hoping this will be worth all the spam I'm
getting as a result of my naively using this newsgroup and using my
real email address... AARGH!

Part of the problem here is that I cannot reply to your postings. Each
time I try, when I hit Send, there's no response. I've never been able to
reply successfully. I've only been able to post new messages; this is
the third one. What am I doing wrong?

I've Quit Notifications, and think I'll leave it off, as I have no need for it
as far as I know. I rebuilt the database again. Same result as before:
any attachments cause message sending to fail by stalling after 33 KB
are sent. Without attachments, they send fine. Apple Mail and
Webmail send attachments fine. Please help!

I didn't Quit Notifications before I installed the latest Office updates.
Was I supposed to? Does this mean that these updates are corrupted
and corrective action is now needed?

Thanks, Dion

* Use a modified e-mail address: Use a different version of your e-mail
address that others will understand, but that spam tools can't automatically
pick up. For example, if your actual e-mail address is
"[email protected]", consider using a modified e-mail address such as:
"emailnameaccount.com.invalid",
emailname@REMOVE_CAPS_AND_INVALIDaccount.com.invalid, or
[email protected]_SPAM. In this case, the spam tools will send mail
to an invalid e-mail address, and others will know to exclude the
"(removethis)" when they send you e-mail. When you post a question or reply
to a discussion group, just enter your modified e-mail address in the
appropriate box.

Send & Receive problems are the hardest to track down since so many things
could cause the problem. You could try using TCPflow to track the traffic.

<http://www2.entropy.ch/download/tcpflow-0.20.dmg.gz>

Once you have installed tcpflow, you can activate it from the terminal. You
will need the administrator password.

For Ethernet port enter: sudo /usr/local/bin/tcpflow -i en0 -c

For PPP port enter: sudo /usr/local/bin/tcpflow -i ppp0 -c

Copy the info. Your ISP might be able to figure out what is going wrong when
you send attachments.

If not, send me the log off list.

You should always quit notifications before updating. Use "Remove Office"
and do a fresh install then update. You will need your CD code when starting
up.

"Remove Office" is located in the Value Pack folder on the Office X CD.

Also check your Startup Items. If there are any Microsoft Database daemons
listed, delete them all.

Diane,

Please confirm that you're suggesting that because I did not turn off
Notifications (which I don't use and don't see documented in the
update Readme files) when I installed 10.1.2, 10.1.3, 10.1.4,
and10.1.5, that my Office installation has been corrupted and I must
remove it and reinstall all these updates! I'd just like to be sure
that you have specific reason to justify this, as it will be a lot of
effort; Microsoft didn't see fit to integrate these bug fix releases!

I know that removing and reinstalling is often the first step in
troubleshooting, but I don't care to do it unnecessarily, particularly
when it's been made so cumbersome. And I just purchased Office X only
a few months ago!

BTW, I cannot reply to this newsgroup from the Microsoft site using
IE. Nothing happens when I hit SEND. If you see this it's because
I've finally been successful by entering through Google.

Thanks, Dion

The ReadMe tells you to turn off all Office applications when you install MS
updates.
Notifications is an Office application. I think this is lost on
many users. The Microsoft Database daemon allows the Reminder to work even
if all MS applications are closed. The daemon is actually used all the time
to access the Database. Even Word uses it. This is why you need to Quit
Notifications and/or the Microsoft Database daemon when you install MS

For more info on the daemon see:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq/daemon.html>

Did you check your login items for the daemon?

Usually, the install will just fail if you don't turn off Notifications. Did
you check the version page to be sure you had Entourage updated correctly?

Version Info for Entourage.

Note: Components of the 10.1.3 update are included in the 10.1.4 update

You could have purchased it yesterday and still need to re-install. This
takes only a few minutes and then you can be guarantied that it's a good
install.

Try using a newsreader until you can get Entourage going.

Diane,

Thanks for your explanations. Here are my results:

* There was no daemon in my Login items
* The previous installation and updates of Office did show all the
correct version numbers
* I have removed Office X and reinstalled along with 10.1.2, 10.1.4,
and 10.1.5.
* The new installation and updates also appear to be the correct
versions.
* The problem is unchanged with symptoms as follows:
-- Entourage can send messages with no attachments, and can receive
any messages.
-- If an Outbox message has an attachment larger than 33 KB, then the
sending process stalls at 33KB every time. After a delay of about a
minute, the error message "Mail error. Server is busy; try again
later. Error 5421." is returned.
-- I have tried selecting the different encoding schemes with no
difference seen.
-- If the Outbox message has a smaller attachment, then the sending
process stalls when either 1KB or 0KB remains to be sent (e.g., 6K out
of 7K sent). Same delay and error message as above.
-- A couple of times, using a 1KB attachment, the message was sent
correctly. With two such attachments, the message was sent once
successfully, and failed several times. With three such 1KB
attachments, sending the message always failed.
-- I have had no problems sending large attachments using Apple Mail
or web-based mail.

I'm not particularly eager to monitor TCP/IP flow as the results might
be hard for me to interpret. Any other suggestions?

Also, posting to this newsgroup is very unreliable, as much of the
time I can't seem to get a reply posted. Last night I tried over and
over, but no response. Let's hope this morning it works... Could we
communicate by regular email?

Thanks, Dion
