Entourage attachments multiply like bunnies

I just noticed that emails with attachments In Entourage are
generating dozens of copies of each attachment in the Microsoft "saved
attachments" folder without my doing anything more than scrolling over
the email list. Is this a bug? a virus? or what? I have deleted all
suspect emails from the deleted folder and emptied the trash and the
problem continues.... It is occasionally causing the application to
crash on my G4 running OS 10.2.6.

Help!

AFAIK, files are created in Saved Attachments when you double-click an
attachment within the email instead of saving it to disk and opening it
there. After all it has to be created somewhere. Are you sure you haven't
opened them from within the message?

I am using Entourage 2001. I am not double-clicking. In fact, I
replicated the rpoblem using the up/down arrow keys, not the mouse.
Any time an email with an attachment is highlighted -- not clicked on
or double-clicked on -- a copy of the the attachment is saved to the
"Saved Attachments" folder. If I scroll the list of emails in the
in-box once or twice a day, I can end up with a dozen or more saved
attachments in a couple weeks for each email with an attachment.
