"Entourage cannot connect to server"

K

Kurt

Been getting this a lot lately trying to reply to emails,
"Entourage cannot connect to server, verify that you are connected to
Internet" (of course I am, through DSL router 24/7)

I can usually get them to send either by quitting E and opening again,
or selecting another mail account (all get sent through same outgoing
server).

Problem is intermittent, but starting to be more frequent.

I posted this quite a while back.

Can't believe stumped the experts on this one.

Is this situation really that usual?

What kind of server? Is it Exchange?

No. Stand-alone installation on one machine through an Ethernet router
direct to DSL that serves 3-6 machines.

Yes, 11.3.6 (070618)
and I obviously missed it then,

Love some thoughts on this.

That doesn't tell me if the account is POP/IMAP or Exchange :)
The reason behind the question is that POP and IMAP use SMTP servers
whereas Exchange sends through the Exchange server through WebDAV
(which is quite different). If you're saying no, I assume it's not
exchange.
Any recent change in the SMTP?? Are you using the SMTP from your ISP??
Now that's the part I don't understand...
It could be a problem on the server though (I have problems like that
with one of my e-mail accounts: every other day the server is down).

I guess the only way to test that would be to use an alternate SMTP
server (if you have one).

It's SMTP (Exchange too complicated to figure out nothing in E help
menu- never looked into it- BTW- are there any plain English easy
instructions on configuring Exchange for Mac?)

I have about 12 email (plus gmail) accounts and get email from all of
them everyday through E.

All use the same outgoing SMTP server: mail.pacbell.net. (even gmail)
Why one and not another?

Hasn't happened today, but I got it a couple time yesterday. All this
while web and news (through Giganews) were speedy.

- Connect to your webmail page through your web-browser
- copy the URL
- use the URL as your Exchange server address in the Exchange account
settings in Entourage

That works in the vast majority of cases.
Most of the problems people have are with Exchange over SSL when the
server has a self-signed certificate. You need to import the
Certificate in the X509Anchors in Keychain Access or you get a warning
every time you connect telling you that the server can't be trusted.

It could very well be a problem with this SMTP.
For the gMail account, you could use the gMail SMTP (they have
instructions on their page - very easy to follow). If that obliterates
the problems for the gMail account, it'll give you the answer.

Thanks for demystifying Exchange :)

Will try the tips for the SMTP. Actually, all my accounts, except for my
pacbell account, have alternate SMTPs.
I'll try switching a couple over.
