Entourage cannot rebuild database

After upgrading to Quicktime 6.5.1 and iTunes 4.5, I cannot open
Entourage. It may not be related but this is the only change I made
since it was last open.

I received an "Entourage cannot access your data. To attempt to fix
the problem, rebuild your database" message. After trying typical
rebuilding I received the message "Compacting failed. Access
permission is denied". Next I received the message "Typical Rebuild
failed, would you like to try an Advanced Rebuild?". After trying this
I received the message "Rebuilding faild. Access permission is
denied."

I'm running MacOS X 10.3.3, on Powerbook G4 1Ghz (Titanium). Fixed all
disk permissions (it did not help). The database file now has no
access in the Finder.

I also tried to copy my "Main Identity" and open the copy database,
but had the same experience again.

Any suggestions?

That sounds bad. What do you mean "The database file now has no
access in the Finder" ? Do you keep it in the standard location
~/Documents/Microsoft User Database/Office X Identities/Main Identity/ (or
some other named identity folder)? Or is there an alias somewhere along the
route? When you do a Get Info, does Ownership and Permissions say you can
"Read & Write", or what? If not, can you flip the popup to Read & Write? If
it's dimmed and doesn't let you flip it, click the "Details" triangle. Who
does it say is the Owner? The owner should be you - your OS X user name -
dimmed and locked, and your access should be Read & Write. If it's anything
else, download BatChmod from versiontracker and use it to change the owner
to yourself with read/write permissions. (Or if you know how to do this in
Terminal, that's fine too.) You may need to check all the files in your
Identity folder and the Identity folder itself.

Keep checking MacFixit - they have reported problems with iTunes 4.5 - you
could even report this issue there. It's not impossible that it's related,
although I don't know how. Sorry I can't be more help at present.

After further probing I found and fixed the problem. I would like to
share it for the benefit of those who will have the same issues.

Following the problem with Entourage, while I opened Microsoft Word
(X) and Excel (X), I received an error message saying "Error trying to
open Microsoft Framework X". The solution to this problem is in this
site:

http://www.entourage.mvps.org/errors.html#anchor-error_framework

After going to the Finder and changing the permissions of the Database
of the Main Identity (HD/Users/user_name/Documents/Microsoft User
Data/Main Identity/Database) according to the permissions as explained
in the above link, Entourage opened again with no problem.

That description is a little confusing in that the illustration seems to be
for Microsoft Entourage the application and NOT for the Database file of the
Main Identity (or other named identity) in
HD/Users/user_name/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Main Identity/
folder as the instructions provide. Right instructions, wrong illustration,
although the same specifics apply.
