Entourage can't send

I have one user on Mac OS X and Entourage. The user can
receive e-mail, but can't reply. We are running e-mail on
Exchange 2000. I've setup the user to use IMAP4, the
machine has also been configured for IMAP4. I also setup
the machine IP address to gain access in IMAP4 and as a
relay in SMTP. We verified the machine address to that of
the Exchange settings, and they match. The user receives a
message when trying to send or reply stating that the
server can't be found. The settings in Entourage point to
the correct server. Any ideas?

I'm having the same situation. I can receive, but not
send. Spent over an hour on the phone yesterday with
Microsoft. They are researching and assured me that they
would contact me today. I'll post the fix if they are
able to figure it out.

Have you verified that the SMTP server is configured correctly and working?
Try setting up an account in Outlook Express on Windows and see if you can
send using the SMTP server.

The SMTP server is fine, all other users can send and
receive. The only one that can't is the MAC machine. All
other machines are Win2k.

What client are the Windows users using? What type of account is set up? I
suspect they are using Outlook an connecting over MAPI, which is why they
can send.

All other clients use Outlook 2k with MAPI, all have SP3
loaded. I'm not sure what you mean by type of account. The
problem still remains with the one Entourage user, and not
the Outlook users.

Is the exchange server fully up to date ?? ?I've seen that in the past with
some servers that were missing a patch (not affecting Win users).

Hi,

I'm looking at the exact same problem. Were you able to
solve the yours? If so, what's the fix?

Thanks in advance

There is a properties tab in Exchange 2000's SMTP server called
"Authentication." It can be set to allow only windows authentication, in
which case a windows machine would be able to send but a Mac would not.

Normally, however, the Exchange SMTP server is not set up that way, since
you have to allow other mail servers to connect anonymously. So if this is
the case where you work, there is probably another SMTP server (other than
the Exchange server) that is used to communicate with the outside world.
Many companies do it this way for security purposes.

If you can find the name of another SMTP server within your domain, you may
be able to send through that one.

Good luck . . .

I found out here that our DHCP server handed out another
IP address to the MAC. I had a relay only option set in
Exchange to allow the MAC user to replay from SMTP. A long
story short, I had to change the replay IP address to
match the machine...all is good.

Great! I'm glad it worked out fine. Thanks a lot for posting back to the
newsgroup and giving us the solution,
