When I delete several messages in quick succession, Entourage
frequently closes with a message that it must shut down but won't
affect other MacOS operations or something to that effect. Why is
this, and is there anything I can do about it?

First thing to try is to rebuild the database:
Start Entourage with the option key held down until you see the rebuild
screen and follow the directions - you want to chose 'rebuild' or 'advanced
rebuild' (depends on your version of entourage). The rebuild will take some
time, but should eiminate any database problems that may exist. Post back if
that doesn't solve the problems.

This has been happening to me also. I've rebuilt and it still happens.
It's only started since I installed the latest MS (11.3.8) update. I
suspect a gremlin and I hope the MS folks take this seriously enough
to troubleshoot it. Happens mostly with the delete key, sometimes
when mousing, and usually when you're trying to get things done
quickly.
