Entourage continues to download all old mail

Over the last couple of weeks, entourage has twice gone out and
downloaded over over 1500 old messages and loaded them in as
duplicates. Is there a tool or program to check my mail database (I'm
assuming something is corrupted), and then eliminates the duplicates.
Am running Entourage 2004 for Mac.
