Entourage Crashes when Checking Mail

All of a sudden entourage crashes repeatedly when I check mail
(send/receieve) . Have trashed preferences, repaired permissions, restarted
and still I am unable to retrieve messages. I have three accounts that I can
watch being checked -when it reaches last it "unexpectdley quits". Have been
reading threads and see something about a rebuild. Is this a last resort and
if yes, how do I back up my identity correctly? Thank you

A rebuild isn't a completely last-resort technique. It does lose certain
specific pieces of data:
* category, project, and link assignments to Exchange / IMAP data
* all folder references (so you have to revisit Rules / Views that deal with
specific folders).

The rest should be kept just fine.

Also, when you perform a rebuild or a compaction, the original database is
kept unaltered (just renamed with [Backed up on ...]) so it also serves as a
backup.

If you hold down the option key when you boot Entourage 2004, it will launch
the database utility and give you the options of Verifying, Compacting or
Rebuilding your identity.

I once had this problem and it proved to be a bad piece of mail that
was causing it. I went into the email via the web (in my case, it was
verizon.net) and checked the list for something large or unusual in
some way. There was a spam message that I deleted, and then Entourage
seemed to be happy again. Good luck. KT
