Entourage crashes when trying to send email

S

SK

Can anyone help? I have no problems receiving mail, but sending is a
constant problem. For example, first couple of emails sent OK today,
but now it keeps crashing.
I've tried re-intalling and re-building the data base, several times in
fact.
History: Entourage worked fine on my old Mac G3 with Entourage/Office
2001. Imported all the data base to my Mac G4 with Entourage/Office X.
All went well for two weeks, but now it's constant crashing.
Any suggestions much appreciated.

Version 10.1.0 (2006). By "fully up to date" I take you are asking if I
have downloaded updates? Answer is yes, but that resulted in being
unable to send any email at all. So I re-installed which did at least
mean I could send one or two emails before crashing again.
I appreciate any help you can give because I prefer Entourage.

Ouch... 10.1 is not quite up to date. THe current version is 10.1.7 +
security update.
What version prevented you to send any e-mail with the same settings??

Alas, that update was no help before. However, I have just added
10.1.7 + security update once again - but still I cannot send email.
Any other thoughts please Corentin?

Create a new Identity in Entourage and try sending a test email. Does it
work? If yes, then this could point to corruption in your database or a
corrupted preference.

If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration. Try
deleting that account and start with a fresh account.

Check for a bad message. Go to Options on that Account and select Allow
Online Access. You will see an icon at the bottom of your folders. Click on
this and find the offending message and delete. Be sure that you turn off
the "preview" pane when looking at your online message LIST. If you are
unable to use Online Access, try accessing your mail account through your
ISP/organization¹s web based interface.

Thanks for your help Diane.
Tried creating new identities (I have four for family) already but no
difference. Still crashes after few minutes. I have already gone
through total re-build which meant creating new identities. However, I
don't know about a corrupt database or preference - how would I find
out that?

Could be a bad message, but can't see anything. The 'Allow Online
Access' boxes were all already checked (in Accounts). But I cannot see
any icon at the bottom of the folders (I assume that to be the InBox
and Outbox folders etc). What sort of Icon am I looking for?
Could it be that I an unable to use it?

When you say 'try accessing your mail account through your
ISP/organization¹s web based interface', I take that to mean view the
emails via the internet website, in my case via
<http://webmail.beeb.net>. No mystery icon showing up there either
way.

A new iudentity rules out the corrupted database. The rpeferneces are
stored in ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
You can try moving them to the desktoip and relaunchng the app to see if
it makes any difference.
You can also try using DiskUtility to repair premissions on your boot
volume.

Thanks. But no luck. Tried launching from the Preferences as you
suggested. And have been checking the Disk Utility almost daily - it
gives disk all-clear.

Tried creating new identities (I have four for family) already but no

In System Preferences create a new User. Switch to the new user and see if
Entourage crashes. You will need to enter your account info. Remember to set
to leave mail on server for this test. If it crashes under the new User,
then you will need to do an Archive and Install of the OS.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/glossary/archive_install.html>

If it does not crash, then the problem is in your User's folder. Delete all
of Entourage's preferences.

~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Entourage.plist

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Entourage Preferences

See a screen shot of the icon here:

When you check your email via your browser, check your messages. Delete your
oldest message and any other spam message.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

Thanks for all your help Diane and all colleagues. Just discovered (by
accident) what I was doing wrong.

Under Tools, then Accounts, I was not only putting in the wrong smtp,
but also (under Advanced Sending Options) I was blobbing "Log on Using"
intead "Use same settings as receiving mail server."

Why? Well that's because I changed Broadband server to Primus Telecom.
I naturally wanted to keep my existing addresses, but I (wrongly)
assumed I had to use the new smtp codings and password.

Why did I assume that? Well that's simply because Primus told me I had
to do it that way.

In fact I didn't have to change my settings at all !

Thanks again

Great, glad you got your problem solved.

However, in that circumstance Entourage should not be crashing - you should
get an error message to say that the connection could not be made, but you
shouldn't get a crash.

What a pity I didn't get error messages instead of simply crashing. An
error message would have been far more helpful of course, for it would
have given a clue to the problem area.

Instead I've wasted two months doing everything right from completely
dumping all my address and mail, to re-installing both Entourage and my
OS, even to reconfiguring my hard disk.

Thanks again,
SK
