Entourage Crashing when receiving some messages

D

Deutsch

The mail program unexpectedly quits when trying to open some messages
that have been forwarded. It does not even allow me to throw it in the
trash before crashing. I've tried turning off the junk mail filter,
but it still happens with only SOME messages. I can not figure out
what could be causing it to do so. I've tried having the same message
sent to my web mail account and it opens with no problems. Therefore,
I've figured out it is something to do with Entourage. Can anyone
help?? Thanks.

It sounds like the mail messages cause Entourage to crash once they've been
downloaded. In that case, the Junk Mail Filter probably isn't the culprit,
because it runs on messages only as they're received.

Begin by rebuilding the database. If you're in Entourage X, first go to
Entourage -> Turn Off Office Notifications. Now, quit Entourage, and then
restart Entourage holding down the Option key. When the Rebuild dialog box
comes up, choose to do a Typical Rebuild. You might need to attempt an
Advanced Rebuild to cure the problem.

If the problem still occurs after rebuilding, go to Entourage -> Mail & News
Preferences (or Edit -> Preferences -> Mail & News, depending on your
version), click the "Read" tab, and uncheck the option to "Display complex
HTML in messages." Click OK, and then try opening one of the messages.
Does it help? If so, that means that some preference file the rendering
engine is using is corrupt. Drag Macintosh HD/Users/<Problematic
User>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconfig.plist and
com.microsoft.explorer.plist to the Desktop. Re-enable the preference to
display complex HTML, and try again. If Entourage crashes again, move the
Internet Preferences files back. If the problem is fixed, you can trash the
Internet Preferences files.

You might also want to try deleting HD/Users/<Your User>/Library/Caches/MS
Internet Cache.

One of my Entourage X users has a persistent problem with her
application crashing/quitting shortly after opening it. It is an
intermittent problem that occurs about once a week. My IT team has
reinstalled the application & rebuilt the database a couple of times.
What might be causing this to happen? FYI - the problem didn't exist
when we had our email on an outsourced server; it has only happened
since bringing our email in-house onto an Exchange server. None of our
other users have this problem.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Corrupt email messages will sometimes crash Entourage. You can turn off
your Preview Pane (the shortcut is Apple-\) which will stop Entourage
from processing the email. Then you can delete it.
