Entourage crashing

I've installed MS Office X on a brand new G4 Powerbook just a few days
ago, but already I have an apparent problem with Entourage. It worked
perfectly last night, but today whenever I try to start it up the
software quits with an unexpected error message and no further clues
about what to do next. This happens immediately after the start-up
tone, so I don't get as far as seeing the inbox.

Surely the software can't be corrupted already? I did try to
reinstall from the CD, but evidently need to deinstall the original
installation first.

Any clues what might be going on here? Are there any known bugs with
Entourage, and if so what course of action is recommended?

Thanks!

Andy

Good news and bad new since my original posting. Quite by accident I
stumbled upon the database rebuild function, by holding down the
option key while booting Entourage, and hey presto - recovered my
files. Great, I thought.

Next day, I started it again and found everything had disappeared.
Even the copy saved during the rebuild ("Old Database") wouldn't open.
Luckily, I only lost a few days worth of work, but it was frustrating
nonetheless.

Since then, Entourage has behaved itself. I hope I don't need to try
any of the more radical suggestions, but thanks anyway!

Cheers

Try choosing 'switch identity' from the entourage menu and see if your
rebuilt identity shows up there.

I am running Entourage 10.1.1 on a ibook. It has been fine for about a
year. A couple of days ago when I launched all bar the first 6 or so
emails were not displayed in the inbox .
If I clicked on the blank area then I could make individual messages
appear - but then Entourage would crash. I found the same was
happening with other large folders such as Deleted & Sent. I can
send and recive new emails ok - though the application is unstable aln
crashes frequently. I am pretty bad at sorting problems so if you have
any advice it would help if you could explain in the most simple
language.
Many thanks, Nick, Devon UK

Try rebuilding the database. First, go to Entourage -> Turn Off Office
Notifications. Now, quit Entourage, and then restart Entourage holding down
the Option key. When the Rebuild dialog box comes up, choose to do a
Typical Rebuild. If that doesn't work, repeat, choosing to do an Advanced
Rebuild.
