Entourage crashing...

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

I just recently purchased Microsoft Office 2008 for my MACBOOK PRO running OS X and for the most part the programs work fine, except for Entourage.
Whenever I click on SEND/Receive my mail starts to come in then the program crashes. I say this occurs @ 95% of the time, while in the other 5% it does not collect my mail at all but tells me that it will re-check in 10 minutes. I am trying to bring messages in from only my HOTMAIL accounts.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Is this a free Hotmail account? Entourage cannot send or receive mail with
free Hotmail accounts, only with the paid accounts.

It sounds like some corrupt spam messages are causing you problems.

Do you have any messages in your Outbox that have not sent?

How many messages are you trying to download? Is this your daily mail, or do
you have stored messages on the server?

Have you updated Office 2008 since installing? Exactly what version of the
OS are you running?

Thank you both for your replies and thoughts.
This new software package I installed on my MAC to assist me in running our three Bed & Breakfast while away from the office. I have many emails in two of my four Hotmail accounts, all of which are paid subscriptions. In my main account I have 1700 messages that Entourage is trying to download, it is during this process that it crashes.
My emails are being sent out and are being received, and at present none are awaiting to be sent.
ENTOURAGE version 12.0.0 (071130) shows no current updates avail. and is running on OS X 10.5.5

I'm surprised that Entourage tells you no updates are available. The latest
version is 12.1.4. You can download it from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx

I believe you have to download 12.1.3 before you can install 12.1.4. There
is a link to the 12.1.3 download on the page indicated above.

I hope that helps your problem.

I would use my web browser to move your messages into a holding folder.
Leave a few messages in the Inbox for downloading, then add the next batch.
By downloading in smaller groups, you can identity the problem email and
delete it, or this might get all emails without a problem.

It sounds like your Microsoft AutoUpdate application did not get updated so
it's showing no updates available.

In case the above link does not work:

You need the 12.1.0 (SP1) updater then the 12.1.3 and lastly 12.1.4.

I downloaded the .4 update, then found out that before you could install it I needed the .3, then I found out that I needed the SP 1 update. Ok, I downloaded and installed all three updates and Entourage now works much better. It no longer crashes.
However, when trying to work this problem I found out that my MICROSOFT UPDATER is not working properly. When I click on the updater or the update option in Entourage I get the option to complete the process either manually or auto, I choose manual then click the update bar. It then shows that there is only 1 update to download ( it never showed the 3 updates you both told me about) which is the newer version of the updater, 2.1.1, but whenever I click INSTALL I get the same response every time....THE CONNECTION TO THE UPDATE SERVER WAS INTERRUPTED. I have been trying to use this updater for some time and I get the same popup both at home..CABLE and at work DSL through-out the day..it have never worked.
Thanks again for your comments and assisitnace.

That's progress. :)

Let's be sure you are selecting the correct AutoUpdater.

1) Prior to Office 2008, the MAU was listed in the root Application folder.
This MAU only works with Office 2004 and Office X.

2) The Office 2008 MAU is now hidden away. Office 2008 switched to package
installers and requires a different updater. If you use Office 2004 and
Office 2008, you will need both types of updaters. The Office 2008 MAU
cannot see the updaters for Office 2004.

/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0

Check be sure it shows v 2.2.

I suggest setting MAU to Auto. This notifies you and does not install.
Otherwise, it's left up to you to check. I think it's best to get
notifications.
It then shows that there
is only 1 update to download ( it never showed the 3 updates you both told me

If you have more than one copy of Office installed, for example, you have
Office 2008 installed on your main hard drive and a backup on an external
drive or another partition. The AutoUpdate will tell you those need updating
also. This is confusing since you just updated and are wondering why it
tells you there are updates to download.

You can download the updates from Mactopia. I have the links listed here:
