Entourage database over 4GB

My brother writes with a database-size problem. Can anyone help? I had no
idea there was a limit... I now see confirmation of this on the mvps FAQ
web page (thank you), but no clear indication of what he can do now that he
is in this pickle...

³I have a Mac Power Book G4 Titanium, OS X.2.8, Entourage X. My Entourage
database has bumped up against a 4GB limit, of which I had not been aware.
Now my Entourage will not open. Neither a typical nor an advanced rebuild
will compact the database below 3.99 GB, and in no case will Entourage open
my primary identity. It easily opens new identities, but gives me no option
to import key portions of my primary identity into a new identity. What can
I
do?

Entourage issues warnings well in advance of the 4 GB database limit,
warning that it cannot be exceeded without loss of access to the database.
Pleading ignorance of the limit won't work; your brother has to have ignored
repeated warnings. Once that limit has been reached, the database indeed is
locked up and inaccessible. This is unfortunate, and it is possible that the
limit will be increased or removed in the forthcoming Office 2004, but until
that product appears we won't know, and I know of nothing that can be done
to gain access to that database. Still, hold on to that database; a solution
may appear.

Thanks for the help, Allen. My own database is only 500 MB or so, so I
really had no idea. My brother is using the earliest version of Entourage
X, which, as the web page FAQs state, issue no warning at all about database
size... The web page says:

Note: You must use the 10.1.2 updater from MacTopia to get that 4 GB size
plus warnings. The earliest release version of Entourage X did not have
those features.

Hi, Ignat,

I don't think your brother can be using the earliest version (10.0.0) since
that had only a 2 GB limit, if I remember correctly. (I may have that
wrong.) If I remember correctly, it was SR-1 (10.1.0) which brought in the 4
GB limit. And I'm really pretty sure that whichever version (10.1.0 or
10.1.1) brought in the 4 GB limit also brought in the warnings. They go
together. Anyway, he'll just have to hang on to it for now, like Allen says.
