Entourage Database

When you delete your messages from the "Deleted Items" folder, does the
database file actually decrease in size (MB)? My experience is that
when I delete several thousand messages and rebuild the database, I do
not see a corresponding decrease in size of the database file. Dan

No. You have to compact the database.

Really? When I compact the database, it definitely gets smaller. It
sounds to me like the problem might be that you are *not* deleting some
huge messages elsewhere. To give a simple example, let's say you send
out some big attachments. Those attachments are now in the database (in
the sent items folder). If you never delete those messages, or at least
strip off the attachments, your database will be huge because of them,
and merely deleting a few thousand tiny text messages will be
insignificant in comparison. m.

Speaking of database size, is there a general rule about how large it can be
before performance takes a hit -- or is it really insignificant? My user
database is about 700MB.

Actually, the slowest thing Entourage does is render HTML messages when it (I
guess) has to go out to the Internet and load stuff for the preview pane.

Matt, thanks for the suggestion about deleting the attachments from the
sent items. Dan

No specific size affecting performance in the latest versions. The number of
messages in an individual mail folder used to have quite an effect when it
went above about 10,000 messages, but even that seems greatly improved in
v2004.

Currently my main database is just over 4Gb, and performance is no different
to a test database that runs at around the same size as yours.

Barry, thanks for your reply on this.

Probably not, though an actual Rebuild might restore information in the
database that isn't showing up for some reason.
