Entourage doesn't start after upgrade to 10.3.9

I've seen other people have had this problem, and saw one person seems
to have fixed it by pulling out the database from the MS2004 identies
folder and reinstalling Entourage. I have a question about doing this.

1. Is this where the Entourage database is:
user>username>documents>MicroSoft User Data>Office 2004 Identities

Because if so, I've got a problem. When I click on that last link of
the chain (expecting to see the next set of file names), the Finder
freezes and the dreaded beachball appears. I have to force quit Finder
at that point.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks,
Amy

Don't mean to resurrect this thread but I have run into the sam
problem. 10.3.9 with Office X. Finder always locks up when I try t
look at the files in Identities folder. This also causes issues wit
Excel. I can open and save Excel files fine but when I try to close th
file, Excel freezes. If I remove the Identities folder, Excel works jus
fine. Any suggestions? TI

There is no application that can provide you with any worthwhile information
in "the files" (Database?) in "Identities" (you mean "Office 2004
Identities" or "Office X Identities"?). TextEdit, BBEdit, and other text
editors can open Database files, but there's nothing you'll see there that
will be of any earthly use. The format is proprietary and secret. And what
in God's name does this have to do with Excel files? What would "removing"
the "Identities" folder have to do with Excel? (By the way, if you really
mean the plain and simple "Identities" folder, that belonged to Outlook
Express 5. You can get rid of it.)

Paul - Thanks for the information. The version of Office is Office 2001
The identities folder I'm talking about is ~/Documents/Microsoft Use
Data/Office 2001 Identities/Main Identity. With all Office application
closed, when I navigate to this folder to just view the files containe
in the folder, Finder freezes and I need to relaunch it. Entourag
works fine, Excel opens and saves files fine but when I try to close
file, Excel freezes. Relaunching Excel opens up any files I had open
If I move my "Main Identity" folder to the desktop, and launch Exce
then I can close the files. I too find it very strange that th
identities folder is causing this problem with Excel. I can create
new identity and go into that identity folder fine. I would keep tha
new identity and import everything from the main identity but Entourag
2001 doesn't have the export capabilities. Unless I'm missin
something....

I have no idea why the Finder should be having trouble "looking at" your
Main identity folder with Office apps closed - this is some system or file
system problem. You're not in Tiger so we can't blame Spotlight. Do you get
this freeze in the Finder _even with Classic OFF in System Preferences_?
Excel 2001 has got nothing to do with Entourage 2001, so it must be a
problem in the file system again (when you close a file, the file system
takes note: the file should now be tagged as "not busy"). I'd really
suggest that you get Disk Warrior if you don't have it and see if it fixes
this.

If it really was only to do with this particular Identity folder find its
files, and you find mo other way to fix your system problems, you could
export everything from the Entourage database and import it all to another
identity using my shareware scripts "Export-Import Entourage 2001" from

MacScripter.net <http://macscripter.net/scriptbuilders/>

That also fixes any residual corruption in the database not fixed by 2001's
rather ancient database rebuilder. But this cannot have anything to do with
internal database corruption if it happens with Entourage closed. In case it
has anything to do with bad hard disk blocks or files that have become too
fragmented try just duplicating (cmd-D) the whole Office 2001 Identities
folder (since focusing on just the Main Identity folder causes your freeze),
then deleting the original and removing the word " copy" from the copy.
Copying the files will usually make much less fragmented, or unfragmented,
versions in a new location on your disk. But I think you really need Disk
Warrior here.
