Entourage emptied my AddressBook!

I applied the recent update that added the ability to synchronize
calendar events and contact info between an Exchange server and iCal
and AddressBook. The calendar items did get synced to iCal in a new
calendar named 'Entourage', but my AddressBook is now empty except for
my own information. I of course was stupid enough to trust this
trashware and didn't backup my AddressBook first, so I assume I'm
screwed. Does anybody know if there was a backup created as part of
the sync, or some way to recover the contacts from Exchange? Entourage
doesn't seem to properly connect to the Exchange server, so I'll have
to borrow a windows machine to check my contacts there.

I'll take a guess that you selected the option to have the sync services
info overwrite the entourage info for the address book when you turned on
syncing.

However, if all the data is still in your exchange account then you should
be able to simply copy the relevant contacts from the exchange address book
to the local one (only the address book of the default mail account gets
synced using sync services - if your default account is an IMAP or POP
account this will be the local 'On my computer' address book).

You state that you have problems accessing the exchange data using entourage
- this may be the problem that needs fixing first - can you send more
details.

I'm afraid I can't do anything about the self confessed stupidity! The only
way anyone learns about the importance of backups is to loose data,
unfortunately.

My tail of frustration involves Entourage 2004, a VPN connection (via VPN
Tracker 4) to my organization's windows server using SonicWall firewall.

After considerable tweaking, the VPN now connects to the server. The
remaining issue is that Entourage shows my exchange server account as "not
connected" though I am connected to the server.

IT at my organization is stumped. I'm using a PowerBook G4, Tiger 10.4.6.

Hoping someone can help...

A couple of things you could try:
- try to enter the address of the server using its IP address instead of
the name.
- see if you can ping the server (using the Network Utility). If you
can't, the problem lies elsewhere :-\

Corentin,

Thanks for your reply.

- Have tried the server address by both IP address and it's name; neither
works.
- Have successfully pinged the server and other IPs on the network (the
printer, to which I can't print... Go figure).

At present, I'm inside the network and can receive my Exchange information.

Any other ideas for when the VPN connection is active?

An update... A battle won... The war continues.

While I can not retrieve Exchange data using Entourage, I am now able to VPN
into the Remote Web Workplace by using the https://IPaddress/Remote in my
browser. I can only access Exchange data this way, as the remote desktop
requires activeX and none of the browsers I have on my PowerBook G4 support
that requirement.

Next question... Is there a browser for mac that does support Windows Remote
Web Workplace (or a setting change for FireFox, Camino or Safari to allow
activeX - which is what it tells me the problem is)?

Still can't print from this computer to the network printer (by name or IP
address).

Thanks for the help so far.

Interesting. Can you connect to the Outlook Web Access page of your
entourage server like that through VPN?

The only browser that has *some* Active X support is IE for Mac
THere is an Active X extension for FireFox, but it only works on
Windows.
Still can't print from this computer to the network printer (by name or IP
address).

Weird...
