ENTOURAGE ERRORS -39 and -49

My INBOX e-mail files started to corrupt (go blank or mix) so I began
deleting what I did not need. In trying to remove deleted messages, I
got an end-of-file error (-39). The program won't open. Sometimes the
error says the program is already open (-49). I'd like to recover the
messages -- certainly the e-mail addresses. I am using OS 10.2.8 --
operating with my Office 2000 in OS 9 to use Entourage 2001. What can
I do to recover?

Make sure you've applied the latest Office 2001 update:
* Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac Security Update (9.0.5)

Download it from Microsoft:
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx#Office2001>

Then, try rebuilding the database. In Entourage 2001, quit Entourage, and
then restart Entourage holding down the Option key. When the Rebuild dialog
box comes up, choose to do a Typical Rebuild. If that does not fix the
problem, repeat the procedure, instead opting to do the Advanced Rebuild.
