Entourage & Exchange 5.5 Question from a "switcher"

J

John Mabee

I just purchased a Mac Powerbook and thought I had asked all the right questions to all the right people before deciding to switch from a PC, but apparently I missed this. At work we run Exchange 5.5 primarily for shared calendar and contacts. We do not use the email features, except minimal "in-house" email occassionally. I have a problem now

Question 1. Is there any way that I can access Exchange Calendar and Contacts from my Mac without asking for an upgrade to Exchange 2000 (which is unlikely to happen

Question 2. I don't suppose the upcoming 2004 version will address this... Can anyone let me know if it does (without breaking NDA)

Question 3. Is there another solution for sharing my calendar and contacts with a PC running Outlook (or if they need to use another program, what might that be?

thank you so much. This is my first Mac, and I really do like it alot. It is only 2 days old, and I'm still learning

See 'ya

Afraid not - only mail, by setting it up as IMAP in Entourage and having
Exchange configured for IMAP and SMTP mail.
Question 2. I don't suppose the upcoming 2004 version will address this...
Can anyone let me know if it does (without breaking NDA)?

As youi realize, no one can tell you without breaking NDA. However, you
probably realize that newer versions of software never (to my knowledge)
become more backward-compatible than previous versions. If anything, they
sometimes require yet newer versions of interacting software, at least for
particular new features. Entourage Exchange is so new that I'm sure you can
expect Exchange 2000 to go on working fine, but I wouldn't expect it to go
backwards to use 5.5.
Question 3. Is there another solution for sharing my calendar and contacts
with a PC running Outlook (or if they need to use another program, what might
that be?)

Definitely. Outlook 2001 for Mac is a free download from MacTopia. It has
far more Exchange features than Entourage - in fact it's pretty close to a
replica of Outlook 2000 for PCs, less a few obscure contact fields and HTML
mail, and works with Exchange 5.5 (and earlier and later). It runs in
Classic emulation in OS X, but Classic is working really, really well in
Panther. It sounds like that's what you need for your Exchange use.
thank you so much. This is my first Mac, and I really do like it alot. It is

Welcome to the Mac.

John,

Entourage X (with Office v. X 10.1.4 Update) uses WebDAV to sync your
contacts and calendar. Since you are using Exchange 5.5 on the backend, this
functionality is not available. So, you would need to upgrade to Exchange
2000 (or later) to get WebDAV functionality.

You can, however, install Outlook 2001. The following article has the
details.

303122 OL2001: How to Obtain Outlook 2001 for Mac
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=303122

But, if you are using OS X you will probably encounter problems running
Outlook 2001. That is why the Entourage update was made for OS X. See the
following article for details.

Another option is to use a terminal server client on the Mac and connect to
Outlook running on the terminal server.

Hope this helps.

Thank you much. I will try Outlook 2001. I am also posting a question in
VirtualPC to see if I can use windows outlook for calendaring until I get
the rest of it figured out.

And thank you for giving me the hint w/out breaking NDA...

I am loving this MAC. Problem is that I really like Entourage also.
(better than outlook)

Yes, this will work. I'm using Windows Outlook under VPC 6.1 and the
calendaring and contacts work the way they're supposed to. Kinda slow,
though, on a PB running at 1.33GHz.

I just have to say the statement below about classic working well in
Panther is not my experience and not what I hear from other users. yes
it works, is an environment you want to work in, no, does Apple
recommend it not really. I visited the Apple store in San Fran and went
to the genius desk for questions about this and they recommended
against using classic as it is just not as stable as native OS x
Panther and it will not communicate well or even recognize changes in
ip address etc.

for me I might as well boot in version 9 to run the damn outlook:2001.

technology roll outs that are not in sync like microsoft and ALL the
other vendors really punish the user, and that is why people do not
spend $$$s to upgrade OS on microsoft.

my experience over 8 years with Macs in a Microsoft natzi IT world.
