Entourage File Backup

Michael

Can anyone tell me where the Entourage data file is located in Mac OS X,
and what is the best way to back it up? Thanks!

It's located in ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office <Your Version>
Identities/<Your Identity>. Copying the entire Microsoft User Data folder
to another drive is the best way to back it up.

The data file resides individually for each user in OS X. Go to [Hard
Drive] > [User] > Documents > Microsoft User Data > Office 2004 Identities >
Main Identity. In that last folder you'll find a file called "Database."
That's your Entourage data file that contains all your Entourage info.

To back it up, simply hold down the control key while launching Entourage.
This launches the Entourage database utility as opposed to Entourage itself.
Then select the option to compact and backup the database. Entourage will
do three things:

1) Compress the existing database (including Database, Mailing Lists, Rules
and Signatures)
2) Backup the database, name it "Main Identity [Backed up (Date/Time)"
3) Save that backup file in the same folder

Then, move the backup file to a safe location (on another drive or burn to
CD-ROM, for example), and you're done. Re-launch Entourage.

If for whatever reason you need the backup (i.e., hard drive failure),
simply reinstall Office 2004 and then replace the initial files with your
backup files (Database, Mailing Lists, Rules, Signatures) in the same folder
and you'll be back in business.

I suggest doing the above monthly if not more often depending on how much
mail you send/receive.

Craig,

Thanks for reminding me of something I need to do. I just tried holding
down the control key and clicking on the Ent 2004 icon on the dock and
nothing happened. I then held down the control key and double-clicked
the Entourage application and it opened just like it always does.

What am I doing wrong?

I searched the site for just the question you answered. However, I am
puzzled. I have been regularly backing up by duplicating and saving the
Office X Identities Folder.

Recently I had a loss of several days of messages (due to larger backup
malfunction).

I tried to restore the messages by deleting the existing and replacing it
with my backup, this did not change the apparent message content.

Further, when I deleted any Office X Identities Folder and then started
Entourage it created a new Office X Identities Folder (in Microsoft User
Data) with a size of ~50KB but nevertheless displayed the same message
content as the replaced file of 370MB. How can it do this?

What file is Entourage referencing?

Mind-Dancer: You would happen to be replacing the Entourage X
identities while running Entourage 2004? If so, replacing the former
would not affect the latter.

I ask because I recently upgraded from X to 2004, and just noticed that
each has a separate identities folder in the MS User Data folder.
Please ignore if you are just using X.

now have to change to the 2004 folder. Please ignore if you are just
