Entourage Freezing - MS are investigating

Following all the recent reports here on frequent hangs in entourage, I
raised the issue through my MVP contact.

The response back from MS is that "They are aware of the situation and are
investigating"

Please, be patient until the cause is identified.

Barry:

When you say "hangs" are we talking about freezing or sending/receiving
mail, etc?

I¹m referring to the Œspinning cursor¹ freezes that happen from time to time
and last between 10 seconds and a few minutes.

Short pauses during incoming mail cycles can be due to scripts running as a
rule action.

When mine freezes, it¹s not seconds or minutes..it¹s until I ³force quit.²
I¹ve rebuilt data base and compacted it too./Hal Kushner MD

my spinning wheel cursor in Entourage froze for a short while before I
updated to OS 10.3.9. Now it freezes for ever. Does anyone have an idea
how to rescue the received mail (mostly the in-data) and switch to a
different mail client?

I had this problem initially in January. Working with MS techs, we
resolved it by rebuilding the database. So much for that. When it
started happening again after I upgraded to Tiger on Friday, I thought
it was purely coincidental, and I followed the same process of
rebuilding the database.

Big mistake. Not only has it not made any difference, a significant
number of my email messages now have a modified date that displays in
my summary list. They're all the same date, 4/5/2005. What is odd is
that whether I sort by Date Sent, or Date Received, the same date
shows. When I look at the headers, 4/5/2005 does not appear *anywhere*.
And the 5% of my emails that do not have b0rked dates, all appear
before the 95% that are b0rked, even though some of them date from
before 4/5/2005.

I tried to fix them by using your (Barry's) -- Correct the date v1.0
25th June 2002 -- but it makes no difference. The date remains the
same.

Grrrrr.

Absent any other suggestion, I'll try deleting the email account
locally, then recreating it. Fortunately, this bug isn't modifying the
mail on the servers - Mozilla running on another machine (a backup)
just loaded my mail account with no problems, and the right dates.

Barry,

Trying to be patient over here but this glitch is dropping my productivity
and increasing my frustration with entourage exponentially.

Any word on progress or timelines?

I'll be looking for a new mail client soon

Did you see this thread: " Re: Important work-around for Tiger Entourage
slow-downs..." suggesting you tell Spotlight to ignore the Entourage
identities, to prevent beachballing and hangs?

Barry,

It would be great if you could raise the issue of Entourage 2004
corrupting attachments after upgrading to Tiger. There have been
numerous posts on this problem and its a killer bug for those of us
using Entourage as our main mail client.

Is MS aware of this problem as well? I can't wait for a fix if there is
no workaround, but don't want to have to revert back to Panther or use
another mail client given what I have invested in Entourage conversion.

Thanks,
-michael

Same issue here, when i open Entourage it freezes after like 30 seconds

while downloading my Hotmail mail. It crashed in 10.3.9 and it still
does it in 10.4 Tiger, started about 2 months ago.

I have removed preferences, deleted account and started again, have all

updates installed.

If i stop the new mail download half way, entourage works great. But
the minute it starts to check for new mail if freezes and cant be
closed, has to be force quit.

Assuming this is an IMAP account, you could try repairing the message list
with a Cmd-Opt-L, when the affected folder is selected. If that doesn't
work, try to delete the cache by control-clicking on the account entry in
the folder listing and selecting 'Empty Cache' from the contextual menu.

If you are running tiger, try removing the Microsoft User Data folder from
Spotlight's indexing list - indexing the large database files will serve no
useful purpose and will take up a lot of processor time

That is certainly something different. Is there possibly a corrupt mail on
the server that is causing problems? Does the mail check work better when
the preview pane is turned off?

Thank you - yes this did help my Tiger system.
