Entourage gets slower the bigger the database?

It appears that the more messages you have in your inbox or sent box, the
more sluggish the program is at reacting to commands, e.g. clicking the To:
field. You wait quite a few seconds before it opens. Is this "normal" or
this there something else at play here? Many thanks, as ever.

You should try to perform a normal rebuild of the database.
Quit all Office apps and launch Entourage pressing the alt key.

Bonjour Corentin
I should have said, the rebuild was the first thing I tried, with no joy.
From your tone, I take it the sluggish behaviour is not normal. The same
happens to both Macs running OS 9.2.

I was full of hope. My impressions is that as the database grows bigger,
Entourage has a lot more to deal with and is not as snappier as it is
with a very small database. Rebuilding the database allows you to get
rid of some "extra weight" and probably fix a few problems at the same
time. Anyhow, it usually helps giving the application some speed back.

Unfortunately, beside that, I don;t have much to offer you in this
regard :-\

The thing is - first you have to delete a lot of messages. That's the best
(often only) way to get Entourage faster again - especially Entourage 2001.
The later versions of Entourage X are much quicker than 2001 when the
database (Messages file in 2001) is large. You should do a ruthless delete
- or archive first by dragging old messages to new folders, drag the folders
to your desktop to make MBOX files (which you can just keep around for when
you might need them or drag back into another "Archive" identity which you
don't mind being slow), then delete the folders of old messages from
Entourage. Be ruthless - archive and delete received and sent messages older
than 6 months. Also control-click on your news server(s) and select Empty
Cache - that will clear thousands of old news messages. Then Empty Deleted
Items folder. After that you may not even have to do a Typical Rebuild to
notice the improved speed, but doing one should help even more.
