Entourage gone crazy; unable to complete actions

Yesterday afternoon, Entourage suddenly went nuts.

The machine is a G4 tower, running OS 10.4.7. It has 512 MB SDRAM.

The machine had been in Sleep mode, contrary to the usual practice of
shutting down when finished with work.

A check by Norton found 4 files, not in any archive, that are infected
with a strain of W32.Netsky.P@mm!enc. The infected files are titled
13.emix, 14.emix, 708.emix, 709.emix.

I cannot locate any of the infected files with Spotlight, though
Spotlight has been set to look in all programs and files. (Normally, I
exclude Entourage from Spotlight.)

None of the infected files can be found using Entourage search.

I have downloaded the latest update to Office; however, it will not
install. Supposedly, there are no requisite programs on the computer.
False. Except for Entourage, all work just fine.

The hard disc has 3% fragmentation. DiskWarrior will not defrag.

All the permissions are in order.

I am the administrator.

The trouble:

If I try to send or receive mail, select a message in the IN BOX, or
select a different folder, the machine starts the action, but quickly
stops and gives the message that "The action could not be completed. An
unknown (or known) error (4362, 4363, 16008--take your pick) occurred."

The messages have no attachments.

An alternate error message is the bigger box telling me that it cannot
send or receive mail to the account. That MAY indicate an error in a
recipient's address. Correcting the address solves that problem, but
that is not the case now.

Once I attempt the first operation (sending mail, for example), the
program freezes, so I must Force Quit it. I may then reopen the
program and try another operation. Same results, repeatedly.

The only message that did go out was a reply, and the only message
received since the trouble began said that the recipient received about
100 copies of the reply. Surmising the machine had gone whacko, the
recipient suggested I shut down the computer for a few minutes. I did
so.

Auto-complete for addresses also failed.

There have been no changes to the account or the preferences.
