Entourage hangs on "apply all rules"

Whenever I select all the messages in my inbox and then select
Message>rule>apply all rules, Entourage first applies the rules, but then
it becomes unresponsive with the rotating colored ball and I need to force
it to quit. During this time the system appears to be attempting to check
one of my pop mail accounts, but I am not sure if this is significant.

Have you tried applying each rule by itself until you figure out which
rule is the problem?

All the rules I had configured at the time I posted my message were
mailing list rules, and they are not shown as separate options on the
message menu. In any case, the problem only seems to occur when I have
selected all the messages in the inbox. If I apply the rules to one,
or even to a group of messages, as long as the group does not include
all the messages in the inbox, the problem does not seem to occur.

AFAIK, Messages > Rule > Apply All Rules does not apply to Mailing List
Manager rules (someone can correct me if that's not the case). So if
you have no rules, then it's very peculiar that Entourage would behave
this way when you issue that command.

I suppose it's possible your mail database is corrupt, and one of the
messages in your Inbox is causing Entourage to touch the portion of the
database that is corrupted. You might want to *BACK UP FIRST* and then
rebuild the database. For instructions, see:

All Rules DOES apply to the Mailing List Manager.

There are 3 different kind of rules in Entourage:

Mailing List Manager (MLM)
Junk Mail Filter
Rules (custom rules you create)

They run in the order listed above. The custom rules also run in the order
they are listed. (top runs first)

Use the MLM for all lists. Use rules for the remainder.

1) POP Rules act on a message ONLY when it first arrives in the Inbox (On My
Computer), NOT when it arrives in any other folder. Once it's moved to
another folder it won't be seen by rules.

2) IMAP Rules are meant to act on a message ONLY when it first arrives in
the IMAP INBOX, not when moved to another IMAP folder.

3) Exchange Rules act on a message ONLY when it first arrives in the
Exchange Inbox.

See "Using Rules with Entourage" for help and examples:

They could make it more obvious if they had it listed under Tools --> Rules
--> Mailing List Manager, Rules, Junk Mail Filter.

Personally, I've always felt Rules should be renamed Custom Rules. Then you
could start on the tangent of why doesn't each application use the same
terminology for functions.

I think JR's suggestion that my mail database might have been
currupted may be the correct explanation. I decided to empty the
trash. At the time I did this no more than 12 messages were displayed
in the trash folder, but when I clicked on empty, the progress bar
indicated that nearly 10,000 messages had been deleted. Since I had
just recenty installed Entourage, and had not imported any messages,
this seemed strange. But since doing this, whenever I have performed
the action that I reported above as causing Entourage to hang,
everything goes normally. So whatever the problem was, it seem to have
corrected itself.

I wouldn't make that assumption. Your database may still be corrupt.
I would still recommend backing it up and rebuilding it.
