Entourage holds DNS info when switching locations

O

Orion Smith

Here's a sort of unique issue I have with Entourage. My company has an
internal mail server called mailserver.company.com. When I connect to it
from within the office, our internal DNS server points me to its 192.168.1.x
address.

But because I'm on a laptop, when I sleep my computer, bring it home, and
open it up again, I have to quit and restart Entourage because it still
thinks mailserver.company.com is at that 192.168.1.x address when of course
now it's at its real-world address of 66.x.x.x

Is there any way to force it to do a DNS lookup every time it connects to
the mailserver?

Thanks,
Orion

Hi Orion!

Your laptop actually IS doing a lookup, but the problem is that it was never
told that its network changed. It's looking for a DNS server that's no
longer there.

Although the sleep feature is nice, it's not a substitute for a proper
shutdown, especially when you are changing networks.

Sleep is great when you need to conserve power, take a break from working on
the laptop or hop on the plane from the terminal, but you really should
shutdown before transporting your laptop.

Besides, a good shutdown can cure a world of potential hurts with your
system by clearing its memory.

Hope this helps! bill
