Entourage & IMAP

Entourage 2004 w/auto update applied

When getting mail from either .mac or my other IMAP server, it
immediately marks it deleted. You can watch it do it in Entourage.

What I've tried so far:
1. Deleted ALL rules because of issues expressed about them in other
messages.

2. Checked, changed and rechanged how Entourage is supposed to handle
deleted messages. In all cases it does do what I tell it to, but it
doesn't wait for me to delete the message, it does it automatically.

3. All this was on .mac, so I got another IMAP mail server to use.
Same results.

4. Installed OSX onto a second partition and loaded a virgin Entourage
on it. This works as advertised.

5. Ran the virgin Entourage from the new partition under the old OSX,
works just like the one on the OSX. Deletes automatically.

In all cases, mail.app from Apple still chugs along fine with no
problems. But I want to use the project integration within Entourage
and haveing email is just part of it.

Any suggestions

What update? There hasn't been an update yet.
When getting mail from either .mac or my other IMAP server, it
immediately marks it deleted. You can watch it do it in Entourage.

What I've tried so far:
1. Deleted ALL rules because of issues expressed about them in other
messages.

Have you really deleted Mail (IMAP) rules? They're in a separate tab from
Mail (POP) rules which is what displays by default when you go to
Tools/Rules. You need to click the Mail (IMAP) tab. It looks to me as you
have an IMAP rule which deletes all messages.
2. Checked, changed and rechanged how Entourage is supposed to handle
deleted messages. In all cases it does do what I tell it to, but it
doesn't wait for me to delete the message, it does it automatically.

3. All this was on .mac, so I got another IMAP mail server to use.

No rules there.
5. Ran the virgin Entourage from the new partition under the old OSX,
works just like the one on the OSX. Deletes automatically.

Rules and other individual options belong to the identity, which is a
database in your OS X user's Documents folder, not in the application.
That's so different users and even different Entourage identities within the
same OS user can run their own rules. It doesn't matter where the
application is.
In all cases, mail.app from Apple still chugs along fine with no
problems. But I want to use the project integration within Entourage
and haveing email is just part of it.

Any suggestions

Check IMAP rules. If you really can't find any there, first just remove this
folder:

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft?

or even just these files:

com.microsoft.Entourage.prefs.plist
Entourage Preferences

from within it.

Relaunch Entourage. If none of this fixes it, do a rebuild of the database
(hold down Option key when launching Entourage and choose Rebuild).

I believe it was called "auto-update" and it installed "auto-update"

I even had a friend launch his office and sure enough, it prompted him
also. According to his logs it just added in a bunch of 'autoupdate'
stuff.

Yes, I saw that and deleted all rules under all tabs.
No rules there.

That's so different users and even different Entourage identities within the
same OS user can run their own rules. It doesn't matter where the

I figured that, and I also figured that whatever is causing the problem
was in the identity.

OK, I did all that, and it is just the same. It seems like what
happens is that it thinks this stuff is pop mail, except instead of
just deleting it off the server, it also sticks in in whichever folder
I told it to put 'deleted' mail, instead of leaving it in the 'inbox'
on my computer.

As info, when I started all of this I migrated all my contacts and
stuff over from addess.app, mail.app and ical.app

But, if that caused the problems, then the new IMAP account that was
created well after I started this project.

To be honest, I'm doing some serious thinking about whether I need the
services of IMAP, or if I should go back to using rock-solid POP mail.

Ah, yes it's behaving like POP and not IMAP. I suppose this could be an
issue at your ISP's end. Did you specifically pay them to have an IMAP
account, or are you trying to set up as IMAP in Entourage without being set
up as IMAP with your ISP. Or there could be an error at the server end.
(Check your Accounts to make sure it really is IMAP, but I believe you.)

OK. Do you still have this email address set up in Mail.app? Is it still a
POP account there? That would delete all messages from the server if Mail is
open and running. Did you say earlier that you have a mac.com account? That
has to be set up as IMAP in any email client that accesses it, or you'll
lose everything to the POP version (unless set to leave messages on the
server).
But, if that caused the problems, then the new IMAP account that was
created well after I started this project.

Sorry, I don't understand that sentence. You changed the account to IMAP
after you crated a project? Or you created a brand new IMAP account (new
email address) after creating the project?
To be honest, I'm doing some serious thinking about whether I need the

IMAP is generally much better. I've had both a mac.com and another IMAP
account for several years through 3 versions of Entourage. No problems at
all with unwanted deletions.

Yes, both accounts in question are in fact IMAP accounts, and are being
accessed that way from Apples mail.app.

But they are not exactly acting like POP's because they are moving them
in my client to deleted. A POP mail would just delete them from the
account on the server.

Oh yeah, my mail.app is the one I'm using until I get this straightened
out. And it is getting it all via IMAP. I have a couple of POP
accounts, and a couple of IMAP accounts, all set up in mail.app
properly and working as advertised.

Any IMAP mail I get stays on the IMAP server until I tell it to delete
it. Entourage is making the deletion step automatic.

If you're not confused, you don't understand the problem? <G>

I originally only had the .mac account as my IMAP account.

When this problem started, after much swearing and banging of head, I
got another IMAP account so that I could see if it was IMAP or .mac.

Does that make it clearer?

I didn't have the problem either, until that 'auto-update' thing, to
the best of my knowledge.

I appreciate the effort....

For those that have followed this. I got it corrected.

I finally realized it HAD to be in the user data, so I exported all of
it to an archive. Then I imported it on a different partition and a
known good Entourage copy. All ran fine. No deletions...

So, I trashed the identity completely (you have to reboot and dump
trash quick to get it out of there), and imported the archive.

The only thing I lost was the projects, which was not a big thing
because I just had a few. And if your addresses are grouped it doesn't
do them inside groups. I don't so that wasn't an issue.

I suspect the software I used to get my addressbook.app data didn't do
a very good job and hosed something that Entourage used in strange and
mysterious ways.
