Entourage - Inbox window opens 62 times !

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

I've been getting this on my 1-year old Imac for a couple of months now and it's SO annoying I'm now only checking emails once a week, or whenever I can find the patience to wait for about 5 minutes until the Inbox stops duplicating itself. I've tried and there seems to be nothing I can do to stop it while it's happening. It has also made the computer much, much slower in general.

Is this a virus?
How do I stop it happening?
Many, many thanks for your help !!!

A faster solution: hit Opt+Cmd+w, or hold down the Option key when clicking
the (red) Close button in the upper left corner of the window. This closes
all the currently open windows at once. This trick works for any Mac OS X
application, not just Entourage.

IIRC, I've had success with simply pressing Command-W enough times (62
in your case ;) to close all of the windows, and then immediately
quitting Entourage. The next time you open Entourage, it should display
only one window.

I've seen this happen on occasion, and haven't figured out the cause. I
think it may be a bug in Entourage.

There are no Mac OS X viruses in the wild. Period.

If that doesn't fix it, you can try quitting Entourage and moving this
file to your desktop (where ~ stands for your home folder,
/Users/yourname):

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Entourage Preferences

Then start Entourage again and see if it behaves correctly.

Note that moving this preferences file to your desktop will cause a new
one to be created the next time you launch Entourage, which means some
Entourage preference settings will revert to their default values.

this is about the only solution, but you can make it a little easier by
hitting cmd-option-W to close all windows at once. Then open just one
window before quitting.
