Entourage keeps reloading identical past messages

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Email Client: pop

Every week, without warning, Entourage reloads every single message from my email server. I don't want to remove all my messages from the server because I often need to access them through webmail off site.

How do I stop Entourage from downloading all my mail again every week? It causes complete chaos, with 8 copies of every message from last year sitting in my Inbox!

If Entourage has such a serious error then why doesn't the majority of
Entourage users experience the same issue? The fact that it happens every
weekend indicates you are either doing a rebuild or your server is doing
something to cause Entourage to loose the message ID.

I can't remember the last time I downloaded duplicates.

Does your provider offer IMAP? POP is not ideal for keeping mail on the
server.

Well, search around.. it happens to ALOT of people. I'd say it's gotta be one of the top problems with Entourage, and since it A)happens with no other mail clients B)happens on multiple accounts, it's an Entourage issue, not a server issue (or, maybe a issue with servers that team Entourage hasn't figured out that everyone else has?)

I realize you're frustrated, but we tend to look at the world through
our own colored glasses.

I've been reading every post in this forum every day for a number of
years, and I can assure you that this does not rise even close to one of
the top problems in Entourage. Add to that the fact that POP is
increasingly diminishing in usage.

People who are accessing their mail through multiple means need IMAP.
The majority of providers now offer IMAP as an alternative. If yours
does not, you should pressure them.

This same issue has happenes to my boss. About once a month Entourage floods in about 9000 emails from the mail server. Since I have had Entourage 08 I have not had this problem. So finally got her to upgrade and BOOM 2 days later 9000 emails come flooding back. I can not believe that there is no patch for this issues yet.

Thank you so much for having empathy if not an answer! I don't really know what to do with the information that this isn't a "top ten" complaint for this board. Or the suggestion that I need to change all my email servers (I have both a business and personal email) to accomodate Entourage's problems with POP.

But I'll continue to hope for an answer. Entourage has a lot of great features I can't get via webmail but I'll probably avoid it until I get an answer. Meanwhile, though, I'm just happy to hear I'm not the only one.

Please, no more examples of Entourage's problem; just get different colored glasses. The only answer is "use IMAP", so obviously no one's ever going to fix Entourage, even though POP works fine on EVERY OTHER email client I've ever used.

This is the one great deficiency I know of on the Mac platform. Apple Mail is horrid, and Entourage is the only real alternative that offers integration with calendaring, notes, tasks, contact, etc.

So, what color glasses will actually blind us to Entourage's deficiency?

Rather than pressuring for Entourage to work?

Why is Apple Mail "horrid"? It integrates with calendaring and tasks (iCal)
and contacts (Address Book), even if they're not all in one application. To
me its main weakness is that it does not include a newsgroup reader.

Another possible color of glasses: have you tried Thunderbird?

I sympathize with your problem, but it may be that Entourage is not the
right app for you. If this is an Entourage bug, it is unlikely that you will
see a fix in the immediate future, since only a few people are reporting it.

Entourage assigns a message ID to message and knows what's been downloaded
by the ID. If YOUR server (someone mentioned once a month) does some sort of
action that changes that ID, Entourage doesn't realize those messages left
on the server have been downloaded and will download them again.

It seems servers are doing more security upgrades lately and does this
server refresh changing the message IDs. The best way to deal with this is
to use an IMAP account.

Many people do experience this problem while others rarely see duplicates.
The problem is not with Entourage but with the server and the type of
account you choose to use. If there was a bug in Entourage, it would be
affecting everyone.

The other side of that coin is that it happens with multiple mail servers (different accounts - I have two), and DOESN'T happen with other clients on the same computer. I use Apple Mail in parallel and it NEVER downloads them twice. I have an iPhone and it NEVER downloads them twice. I used to run Outlook on both of these accounts and IT never downloaded them twice. Only Entourage. So how is that a server-side issue? Whatever is going on - and I realize there may be something happening on the server side - all the other mail clients handle it properly.

This is an argument that has no definitive answer that I am aware of at this
time.
