On startup, Entourage seizes 90+% of processor cycles (per Activity Monitor), even with network disconnected. Cannot access except to Force Quit with Activity Monitor. Sample below:

Sorry, but most of us can only get clues from log reports. It takes a
developer to read them.

Try holding the Shift key down when launching Entourage. Does that help? If
yes, then it's a schedule that's firing and most likely it's a corrupt
message.
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/crashes.html#crash2>

If this doesn't work, in your Microsoft User Data folder, rename your
Identity (named Main by default to Old Main.) Launch Entourage. It should
open in a new blank Identity. Does this launch?

If no, then Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts.
Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test
Entourage there.

Let me know what your testing shows. I also need the exact version of
Entourage and the OS.

Download this script that will show you Office version info. Note there are
different scripts for Office X, 2004 and Office 2008.

Thanks, Diane.

The 2nd option did work: Entourage started properly with the new blank Main Identity, but of course I could not access existing mail (so I restored non-working Identity.) How can I perform this function and retain email account information?

Script ifo on release levels:
Last update applied: 11.5.2

Microsoft Entourage: 11.4.0
Microsoft Excel: 11.5.2
Microsoft Word: 11.5.0
Microsoft PowerPoint: 11.5.1
Microsoft Component Plugin: 11.5.2
Junk E-Mail Protection: 11.3.4
Mac OS X 10.4.11 (8S2167)

Thanks again,

Identity, but of course I could not access existing mail (so I restored
non-working Identity.) How can I perform this function and retain email
account information?

Let's try an easy fix first.

1) Make a copy in the Finder first.
2) Export everything as Entourage archive (.rge) under File --> Export in
the Menu bar. Select to delete everything after exporting.
3) Quit Entourage and launch
4) What happens?

If it launches OK, then try importing the .rge file.

Second option not as easy....
If no, then you will need to start in a new Identity and you should be able
to use the .rge file to start in a new Identity. You can option drag over
the Rules and Signature file. You'll have to reset all the rule folders
destinations and enter account info to create the new Identity.

If the export fails as .rge then there is corruption in your database so we
would need to look at exporting as MBOX files and tab delimited files.

How to manually move your data. (when import fails and/or you need to move
to a new Identity same version or revert to an older version)

Bummer: I don't know how I'd do an Entourage export because I can't use it when it starts with my Identity -- it's looping inaccessibly.

Other ideas?

Thanks, crippy

Can you describe the looping Entourage is doing?

Did you try the Shift key down at startup?
