Entourage loses emails and contacts over 1yrold at database rebuild

There was no warning of this. It has happened twice and i need these emails for project history. It has happened to emails in all folders within Entourage.
1. Is there any way to recover them?
2. What can I do to avoid this happening again - how do i retain email correspondence?

Entourage doesn't delete messages during a rebuild. Possibly, if you've
been instructed to rebuild your Database then it has corruption that's
not getting fixed. You should investigate migrating to a new identity
(new Database).

In the meantime, when you use the Database Utility to repair a Database
the first thing it does is create a backup. Your original is never
changed. You can switch to the old backup by selecting Entourage menu
--> Switch Identity... and selecting one of the backups.

I suggest you turn off your network temporarily to prevent your old
identity from downloading new messages. You can select Entourage menu
--> Work Offline and then reconnect your network.

This is not a typical rebuild issue. It sounds like a schedule that deletes
old messages or your server has deleted the messages and rebuilding
Entourage deletes the link to the messages on the server wiping them from
your database.

Is this a POP or IMAP account?
