This was originally written to Exchange mail admins, but I think you
might have some input on it. In the end, it is a configuration question
about Entourage:
I am thinking that this is going to be a situation where someone
tells me to RTFM, but I'm not able to put my finger on this.
I have a new department that has mail clients attached to an
information store on my Exchange 2003 SP1 Enterprise server.
2 of these clients connect using Entourage:Mac to manage their mail.
The Exchange server has a 50 Meg limit for each email whether it is
being sent or received (Yes, I know, way too generous).
These 2 folks have now tried to send 300 Meg attachments through the
system.
This wouldn't be an issue normally, except that the Entourage client
will resend the message every 10 minutes thereafter, if the mail
doesn't go through. It simply stays in the Outboox on the machine.
These mails each go into my day's transaction logs...every 10
minutes, even though they're being rejected at the receiver's mailbox
or maybe the sender store level mailbox even.
My obvious issue is education of the end user, which we've done. But
I need to prevent future happenings.
I can see no way to limit the sender more than we are already, as the
issue seems to be more that the Entourage seems to allow the mail to
contantly be attempted. Have you run into this scenario in your
world, and if so, did you figure out a way to prevent Entourage from
doing the above mentioned behaviour?
As a band-aid, we're considering simply forcing them to use OWA for
their mail. I am sure it'd be better received if we could figure out
how to prevent Entourage from taking down the system by someone
maliciously trying to send a 10gig mail attachment that gets retried
every 10 minutes for example.
Any thoughts?
