Entourage (Microsoft Office 2001) ID problem

Because of a computer problem I had to re-install complete harddrive
including MS Office 2001. I am using OS 9.1 on an iMac. However I
moved the "Identity folder" from "Documents" >> "Microsoft user date"safe...... not so!! After re-installing MS Office 2001 and moving
the saved "Identity folder to the "Documents" >>MS User data etc. I
get the following message when trying to open Entourage :"This
identity cannot be opened with this version of Entourage". I used the
same version (CD) what am I missing here?
Is there a sequence to this ??
Any and all help is appreciated

Perhaps you had updated Office 2001 on the previous install, to SR-1 or
later, and have not not yet applied updated to your new installation? Get
all the 2001 updaters at MacTopia and apply them. Then try again. Try an
Advanced Rebuild (launch holding down Option key) if you still have
problems.

PLEASE always state which version of Entourage you are using - 2001 or X.
It's often impossible to answer your questions otherwise.

I am just about ready to give up as I have tried everything. Updating
MS Office 2001 (using OS 9.1) only accomplished that when going to
file and closing either Excel or Entourage or Word I got "The
application Microsoft Excel (or whatever) has unexpectedly quit
because an error of type 2 occured. Safe your work etc etc". Leading
me to believe I never updated. I therefore tossed all of Office 2001
again and re-installed. By the way it was still giving me the same
message about not accepting the identity, updated version or not. Now
in the "Main Identity" there are "data base, "data base cache",
"messages", "preferences" etc etc. When I click (out of curiosity) on
let's say "messages" or any of the others Outlook Express opens, is
this normal??? I have tried the advanced rebuild... no go. I have
tried importing to Outlook... no go!! Frankly I think I should just
throw in the towel and chalk it up to the limitations of Entourage.
You can't import mail prefs to another app nor does it seem you can
safe them for a re-install of MS Office 2001 should this become a
neccessity............
An expensive app with serious limitations.

It looks as if you are poking into "Identities" (belongs to Outlook Express)
rather than "Office 2001 Identities"? in any case, you can't open any of
those files so it doesn't matter. You could open the "Messages" file in a
text editor such as Tex-Edit Plus or BBEdit and salvage the text if all else
fails.

You need to use the Office Remover application you can get from MacTopia (if
I recall, the one on the Office 2001 CD was not good) before reinstalling.
You shouldn't reinstall over a previous install. That's why you got error
messages. You preferences are corrupt. Use Office Remover to remove Office
2001 (it won't touch your data), reinstall, and apply all the updates. Then
you should be able to do an Advanced Rebuild of your database, as long as
it's less than 2 GB, the limit. It's true that Office 2001's database
rebuilder still had a long way to go, but it does work 99% of the time. The
current rebuilder for Entourage X (10.1.4) is indeed much more robust, and
it's improving with every update and upgrade. there are often good reasons
why people upgrade - not just for new features but for improved ones.
Entourage 2001 was the very first version - v1.0 - of Entourage. If and when
you move to OS X you should really get Office X - 0r probably 2004 by that
point. There are many, many improvements, and probably the single most
important one is database integrity and rebuilder improvement.

An expensive app with serious limitations.

Office 2001 will entitle you to a much less expensive upgrade price for X or
2004, so not all your money was "wasted".
