Entourage missing messages?

I have just encountered my first problem with Entourage. Out of the
blue today when I log into Entourage and try to get new messages, the
program tells me that there are 309 messages waiting to download. I
know that I don't have all those messages waiting for me as I had
retrieved my latest messages only about 90 minutes earlier. Plus, in
the inbox, there are many "spaces" in the box with missing messages. I
can still access the messages I can still see.

what is happening and how can I fix it?

This sounds like database corruption. You need to rebuild your database. See

As with any procedure like rebuild, it's a good idea to make a backup prior
to running.
