Entourage- not responding

K

karri.hutchinson

It was working fine... then decided to not respond.
No messages or prompts at all... just keeps the rainbow disc twirling.

I've verified the database and there is no corruption.
I've also compact and back up the current database files.

Im not sure what else I can do... it is not responding to anything.
It is Microsoft Office 2004 on Mac OS X version 10.4.8

Thanks for your help and ideas :)

First thing to check is to rename the Microsoft User Data folder to
something else (Old Microsoft User Data?), log out & back in again and then
see if entourage starts. If it does, then something in the MUD has gone
astray, if not, then it's something in the support files.

Report back, and we'll try the next step...

Hi Barry,

I tried a duplicate file, and got the same responce.
-not responding

Normally when I would open the program the box for user password would
pop up... that stoped happening too.
I can't think of anything I have done to have it just stop working. :-/

Thanks for your help Barry.

Create a new User in System Preferences and test Entourage in the new User.
If it works, then the problem is in your User's folder. If it fails, then
the problem is with your OS and you need to do an "Archive & Install".

"Archive and Install" moves existing system files to a folder named Previous
System and then installs Mac OS X again.

Just be sure to check Preserve Users and Network Settings when you select
Archive & Install.

If you have any questions about doing the archive & install see the Apple KB

HI Barry
I am having similar problems on entourage - the spinning wheel will not go
away and it ha been hanging for 2 days, I cannot access anything on the Page
to even try to delete new emails as they may have been corrupted.

I have tried the following things .

1. reset the computer on start up by pressing Alt whilst starting the computer
2. uninstalled the Old version - Reloaded Microsoft for Mac and downloaded
the update.
3. Rebuilt the database.

these still didn't work the ball just keep spinning.

I was reading one of your email and it said to rename the old Data files and
then reset up a new version of entourage. I did this and the new version is
working but...
The problem is that all my old email data is no longer available.
Can I just transfer the data file from the previous data into the new Data
system or is this also going to corrupt the system again.

If not can you suggest a better way to fix this problem -
this is the 3rd time it has happened in 2 months and I am getting ready to
throw the computer through the the window............

I am now using MAC mail which I do not like and I want to start using
entourage again asap.
thanks Alicia

Alicia,

I have the same problem with Entourage and it is usuallyy something
embedded new messages from Directions.com. If I try to open the message
the beach ball starts and never stops. The only way I can get free is
to use the OSX Force Quit. BTW, it says Entourage is not responding. I
restart Ent then select and delete the bad message and everything seems
to work okay.

One new trick with Entourage 2004 is that you can start it up from default
settings - i.e. with Send & Receive All schedule OFF (Manual only) - by
holding down the Shift key at startup - like "Extensions Off" when starting
up your Mac. That allows Entourage to launch without crashing in situations
like this.

You could then turn off Preview Pane and peruse the server looking for
corrupt messages (If you have POP accounts, you'd do it by Allow Online
Access in the Options page of the account settings, then checking the server
icon now appearing in the Folders List and turn off Preview Pane. If IMAP,
Exchange or Hotmail just check your Inbox and folders affected by rules with
Preview Pane turned off.) Delete the message (which actually marks it for
Deletion form the server), connect to the server (Send & Receive All), and I
think you'll be OK.

You can also use webmail to check your messages and delete the ones that are
causing the problem.

You can't transfer data unless you can open the Identity. Try the solution
above of holding down the shift key when starting Entourage. You might have
to move the other Identities out of the folder temporarily so Entourage will
revert to launching the problem Identity.
