POP accounts do not appear "as a separate folder". Do you mean that you have
elected to "Allow Online Access" in the Options page of the account? That
puts a server icon in the Folders List representing the account, yes, and
lets you take a look at the messages _on the server_. (That's not how POP
messages are meant to be read, but you can do it.) Do you also have "Leave a
copy of messages on the server" so they don't suddenly disappear when a Send
& Receive All occurs?
OK, so you're trying to use a POP account as if it were an IMAP account. You
can only get so far that way. POP messages are meant to download to local
folders (Inbox "On My Computer", and any other folders specified by POP
Rules). Such Local copies can of course be deleted easily (they move to
Deleted Items Folder), and you can Empty Deleted Items Folder whenever you
want.
If you try to use the Online Access feature as if it were an IMAP account -
and look at your messages only on the server (why?) - you need to realize
that clicking Delete button or pressing Delete key _is not meant to Delete
from the server immediately_. (To do so would mean selectively connecting to
the server every time: your ISP would object and would send you a waning
after a few times.) What it does is "Mark for Deletion". In fact, that's
actually the same as what IMAP accounts do. The actual purging (deleting)
from the server occurs only the next time you connect to the server. You
don't _have_ to wait for a scheduled Send & Receive All - you could call it
yourself (cmd-K) or connect just to _that_ account (Tools/Send &
Receive/that account).
I'd recommend forgetting about all this. Don't use the server's online
access for regular mail reading, just for special purposes.
Instead, make a new local folder "On My Computer" named for the account.
Make two (or more) subfolders within it if you want to - Inbox, Sent, any
others you want. Make a rule in Tools/Rules/Mail (POP) to move all messages
If <Account> is <That account> to the named folder or its Inbox subfolder.
You can also make an Outgoing rule to move all [sent] messages If <Account>
is <That account> to the Sent subfolder.
Now you'll have a local folder with the new messages from that account all
in one place. When you click Delete they'll move immediately to the local
Deleted Items folder and will be out of your hair.
If you have several computers you may want to leave messages on server. if
you have only one computer you don't need that. (The messages will very soon
fill up the mailbox your ISP assigns you.)
That's how POP messages are meant to be read.
