Entourage overloading proxy...

I got Entourage to get my emails through our webmail
instead of directly connecting to our Exchange server
(which I still need to know how to do). Now Entourage is
constanly hitting the proxy to download and sync my
mail. I have read through all posts similar to my
problems and have still been unable to get Entourage to
work the way we need it to so that we can deploy it out
to our Mac users. Has anyone had success connecting
directly to an exchange server and if so, how? I really
have been stumped by this, so any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

I assume by "webmail" you mean a front-end Exchange server and the other one
is a back-end server exchange server internal to your network. Are you able
to connect to the "exchange" server with OWA? In other words,
http://yourExchangeServer/exchange/you ? If so, are you using that server
address in Entourage?

Yes, I am able to access it w/ OWA and that is the
address that I have as the server. I should be able to
type in the IP of our Exchange server as I did in
Entourage X, but that isn't working. Thank you for the
quick reply.

Sorry if I am misunderstanding, but are you able to connect to both servers
(A & B) via OWA?

Do both http://A/exchange/you and http://B/exchange/you work in your
browser? If so, and A & B are Exchange 2000/2003 then Entourage should work.
It will just be a configuration issue.

What goes wrong when you configure an account against the internal server?
It's possible that you have SSL checked on the exchange account advanced tab
and the internal back-end server isn't expecting SSL.

Keep in mind that an Entourage 2004 Exchange account will only use WebDav no
matter what server it's going against. If you want behavior more like
Entourage X, you can create an IMAP account. You won't get contacts/calendar
sync, so it's probably not an attractive option.

I am able to connect to http://webmailaddress/folder just
fine and that is the address I use for the server setting
in Entourage. When I configure it to go to the internal
Exchange server, I keep getting an error message saying
that my username and password are wrong, which I know
they aren't, so it never connects to Exchange.
How do I set it up like an IMAP account, just out of
curiosity, as I thought this option disappeared in
Entourage 2004. Thanks again for all your help so far, I
appreciate it.

Sorry to belabor this, but can you get to *both* servers with OWA in your
browser? What version of Exchange is it?

You can create an IMAP account, from Tools - Accounts - mail tab. Be sure to
use the form domain\accountID for your account id. This will only allow
access to your exchange mail obviously.

Do you get the same password errors in the browsers against the back-end
server? Entourage has absolutely zero chance of working with WebDav if OWA
is not working in the browser. You might confirm the authentication methods
available on your exchange virtual directory. Entourage supports Basic and
NTLMv2(integrated).

Hi Steve - Entourage relies on the OS X proxy settings. Go to System
Preferences - Network, to disable proxy.

I'm curious, what was the fix for your back-end server?
