Entourage POP3 Problem

Hi guys,
I have recently upgraded to Entourage X 2004, using Panther 10.3.4. I
deleted the preferences, got rid of my Microsoft User Data folder and
started fresh.
However, using multiple pop3 accounts, I have the problem that Entourage
doesn't remember which messages have been downloaded already. It keeps
downloading the same messages over and over again. I have enabled "leave on
server for 30 days", "delete from server when emptied from trash" and "allow
online access".
Do you guys have any clue? I tried deleting the account and then setting it
up fresh again, which worked, but only for a little while. I also rebuilt my
database, without any success.

Anyone else know about this problem? Googling didn't turn up anything,
either. I am at a complete loss. It has to be a bug, the older version of
Entourage didn't do this.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Joe

Are you by any chance checking your mail by looking in the directory created
in your list of folders when you check "enable online access"? (It's the one
with the cpu/envelope icon.)

If so, you are actually looking at the contents of the server, not the
contents of your "Inbox." Those messages will be there until deleted from
the server.

If, on the other hand, the same messages are repeated displayed as "unread"
on pass after pass and you have multiple copies of each email as a result,
you would have a real problem that I cannot solve.

Hope this may help.

Best,

- Bill

Hi Joe,

When this happens, are all mail messages being downloaded multiple times
into the local folders, or are just some messages being re-downloaded?
Also, how often do the duplications seems to appear? Lastly, what type of
POP server is this occurring with? As already noted below (thanks Bill), if
you are selecting the account icon in the folder pane (online access) you
will see the messages that are on the server.

Sorry you are having trouble,
Michael

One more question, do you recall having performed a database rebuild prior
to the messages being downloaded again?

Could provide your server info? Also, could you install tcpflow at
http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/#tcpflow and set it up to monitor POP?

After installing it, type: sudo tcpflow i en0 c port 110

Then repeat the steps as described in your last email. Regarding that, are
the messages still in the Deleted items folder when they are re-downloaded or
is that folder emptied?

Hi Michael,
I have finally found the time to use tcpflow to troubleshoot my problem as
you suggested. Since I don't want to pollute these newsgroups with extensive
logging output, here is the website for you to look at:

http://awayand.freeshell.org/pop3bug.html

The problem is occurring with a POP3 account using the freemail.web.de
service. Looks like a provider problem, I have forwarded the message to them
as well.

Let me know what you think!

Joe
